Terrific Storm Visits Is Killed By “live Wire.” Mr. George F. Wooten St. Augustine Selected

THE WORST HERE IN YEARS.

One of the moat terrific rain, wind
and electric atorma that baa ever been
known bere, occurred last nignt about
7 o’clock. A down pour of rain and
bail, with continnou. clap, of tbunder
end flx.be. of lightning, and wind blow,
log at great velocity, made a atony that
waa awful in ita terrific grandeur.
The atorm waa at ita wont in Old
Waycrom. Many of the great old oak
tree* in that part of the city are blown
down, a dwelling bouae here and there
damaged, fence* destroyed, and electric
and telephone .wire* tangled with the
broken limb* of tree* and atrewn on the
atreeta and sidewalk*

A live wire on Albany Avenue waa
run into by the horse attached to the de
livery wagon of Gorman Bros. The
horse waa thrown to the eround. The
negro driver, Heaikiah Jenkins, sprang
out and on touching the traces received
a bad electric Shock. The horse was
extricated after much trouble and to all
appearances is all right this morning.

Brewer street, waa badly damaged by
haviog both ends blown away.

Mr. Tola Thomas on Church street and
W. R Newsome on Parallel street
The kitchen of Mrs. Smith on A street
waa blown from ita foundation and set
on the ground.
Many of the large oak trees in Old
Waycrom are destroyed, several of them
being torn up by the roots,
Mr. R Saeat, who lives on Thomas
street, thinks that for about out minute
the storm waa the hardest that ha baa
wer known.
ELECTRIC LIGHTS CUT OFT

great danger of accidents from the broken
wirea that were on the streets in all parts

Without a moment's warning, Mr.
R E Heldt was burled Into eternity
last night Coming in contact with a
wire heavily charged with electricity
across the sidewalk on Jane street

For more than half an hour the
body lay oo tba ground, tangled In
the deadly wire. Tiny sparks of elec*
tricity danced about the prostrate
form, while occasional electric fliahes
appeared on the ground near by.
Several neighbor* and frltnde came
shortly after Mr. Heldt'e body was
found, bnt no ona could aporoacb near
it because oi the eleotric charge. Ooce
or twice some one stepped near the
iorm, when a slight electric chock
would warn them of their danger.
An attempt was mado to telephone
the Satilla Manufacturing Company,
requesting them to ehut down the
light machines, but all tho telephones
were out of order. After **vait of al
most half an hour the electric light
company were notified and the negro
lineman, Boyd, was sent out to cut the
wire* With iDeulated pliers and
standing In a chair from the damp
ground, the wires were at lest cut
Mr. Heldt had then been dead for
aome time. Across bla breast, where
one of the wires touched, the clothing
had been burned entirely through.

He noticed an open nmbrell* lying In
the middle of th* sidewalk, end asked
the young ladies to wait a moment
Stepping up near the umbrella, he
could eee the body lying on th* grouod.
Mr. Wooten then Informed the lsdiee
that something was wrong, and re
quested them to go Into tba house
of Mr. J. M. Mathis near by until be
could investigate. Some one than
came out of the Mathis house and
stated that a live wire we* on the
ground outside snd that someone wee
probably hurt Light* were then
brought end the body was found to be
that of Mr. Heldt He was lying on
his face with the umbrella tightly
clasped in his right hand. The wire
was under the body and across the
left hand. Electric sparks warned
them of the danger of approaching too
near until the current was shut off.
All that could bo done was to notify
the eleetrie light company and wait
for the wire to be cut Mr. Heldt had
probably been unconscious several
tninutoi when first discovered.

A committee from the company have

reception of the Waycroa* people on
their viait there in June.

of attractions to visitors at thia season

freight depot received a terrific shock

Appropriations Increased
Wssbington, May 15.—The Senate
Committee on Public Buildings hat
agretd to amendments increasing the
proposed appropriations for public build
ings at Athena, Macon and Rome. The
Athen. appropriation Is fixed at 1100,.
000, instead of $25,000, as in the House
bill. The appropriation for Rome will
be $8,000 for an addition of land to the
present site.
