The Conservative Club
HAS AN ENTHUSIASTIC MEETINO AT
COURTHOUSE UST NIGHT

In response to the call of Chairman
R. P. Izlar, the Conservative Club met
at the courthouse last night at 7:30
o’clock. The meeting was called to
order by the chairman, who, in a few
temarks, stated the object of the
meeting—“to either ratify the ticket
nominated by the Citizens’ Club, or to
nominate a ticket in opposition there
to.” Chairman Izlar then announced
that he would hear nominations for
Aldermen and members of the Board
of Education. Col. John T. Myers
arose, and, addressing the chair in a
few timely and very appropriate re
marks, placed in nomination the fol
lowing substantial, representative
business men: For Aldermen—First
ward, C. E. Murphy; Third ward, S
D. Pittman; Fifth ward, John M. Cox*
For Members Board Education—A. M
Knight, L. Johnson and V. L. Stan
ton. In placing .the names of these
gentlemen before the meeting Col;
Myers paid them a high tribute. The
nominations were seconded by Dr. B.
Q. Williams. No other nominations
being put before the meeting, a vote
was taken and they were declared
nominated unanimously. The meet
ing then adjourned. Mr. W. J. Swain,
auditor of the Atlantic & Birmingham
railroad, wns secretary of the meeting.
Notwithstanding the rain and wind,'
quite u largo and enthusiastic croutfl
attended the meeting. The municipal
campaign is now decidedly on, and
much hard work will be done by both
side- between now and the time of the
white primary, which is to bo held in
December.

Savannah, Ga., Nov. 35.—D. J Fium-

Pierce, who arrived to-uuy,
remain in Savannah until the ship
sails, when he will make the trip with
the negroes to see that they reach
their destination in safety. Fluramer
went to Liberia with the crowd

carried on that ship and on the steam 1
ship Horsa are perfectly satisfied with
their new home and surroundings.
Strike Trouble Settled.
Washington, Noy. 25.—An amicable
settlement has been reached by repre
sentatives of the United Mine Work*
era’ Union and the anthracite coal
operators. Attorney Wayne McVeagh
left the conference at 11:15 o’clock. It
is announced that upon his return the
formal statement of the terms of tin-
agreement will be given out. Presi
dent John Mitchell of the United
Mine Workers who, with Attorney
Clarence Barrow, was summoned to
Washington by Attorney Wayne Me-
Veagb, representing the coal, opera*
tors, arrived early thia morning and
breakfasted at the Hotel Fritz Reuter.
It la said the conference is being held
in Washington Instead of In Scranton
owing to Mr. McVeagh’s health. lit
is very much worn out.
Slept Fifty-Six Days.
St Louis Ma, Nov. 24.—A special
from Centralis, Ma, says:
“Dora Meek, who, after u quarrel
with her sweetheart fifty-six days ago,
immediately fell into a somnolent
trance, has not in that time evinced
distinct consciousness or spoken a
word. Restoratives in the hands of
physicians have failed to arouse her.
Once, when forced to breathe ammo
nia fumes, she coughed, half arose
from bed, mumbled incoherently a
moment rod then relapsed. The fur
ther nse of pneumonia was desisted
from for fear of suffocation. She eats
a little each day, yet apparently does
{t instinctively. Every effort is being
made to rouse her, bat to no effece.
Will Confer With President.
Memphis, Tenn., Nov. 25.—Gen. L.
E. Wright, vice governor of the Philip
pines, will arrive in Washington to
day, where it is understood he has
been summoned by the president for
a conference on proposed Philippine
legislation. It is said that General
Wright will assist in the preparation
of several bills which will be pro
sen ted to congress at its forthcoming
session, notably among which will bo
one to establish a stable currency in
the islands; and it la believed that an
extension of the civil seryice laws in
the arphipc^go will-be recommended

committee before his return to his

New Stock Issued.
Baltimore, Nov. 25.—The Atlantic
Coast Line railroad is considering the
issue of 89,260,000 of new stock. This
la in connection with the financing of
the purchase of control of the L. & N.
road. The proposed issue is to supply
the ten million dollars cash which is
required as partial payment for this
purpose. Such an issue means 92,600
shares of the par value of one hun
dred dollars a share. It is contem
plated to sell this stock at one hun
dred and twenty-five dollars a share,
and at this price it would yield the
company 811.675,000 in cash. The
present stockholders of the company
ill be given the first chance to take
this stock. An underwriting syndi
cate will take what they do nob The
privilege will bo to subscribe to the
amount of forty per cent of their
holdings.
Crum Turned Down.
Charleston, & C, Nov. 25—Adi.-
patch was received here from Wash
ington today that Dr. W. D. Crum, the
negro physician who was to be ap
pointed collector of this port, bad
been turned down by President
Roosevelt. The cause assigned was
political treachery years ago on
Crum's part to Blaine in favor of Har-
rison. Tne business men of Charles
ton made a strong protest against the
appointment of a negro as collector.
They said such action would be very
hnrtfnl to the port just now, and the
general impretaion prevails thsA
President Roosevelt is keeping a prom
ise made to the merchant*of Charles
ton laat spring not to put a negro in
any of the important federal officer
here.
