WORKS A RATHER •< SUCK GAME’
ON WAYCROSS CITIZENS.
Thursday's daily
“Important notice concerning postal
laws and regulations,*’ is the eaptior
to circulars that were distributed at
different residences in’Wsvcross yes*
terday morning by a rather slick lyui*
vidual, who asked that the lady of the
house read them. The young man
left the Impression on some of fats in<
tended victims that, according to a
late ruling of the Poatoffice Depart*
ment, all citizens, who were supplied
by carriers, mutt provide receiving
boxes at their houses or places of
business. The circular conveyed the
information that every householder
could be provided with a mail receiv*
ing box which would be leased to
them by the U. 8. Standard Letter
Box and Plate Company at the rate of
ten cents per year, for a term of Ate
years.
The last paragraph of the circular,
which is is signed, “The U. S. Standard
Letter Box and Supply Company, W.
B. Haoket, President, headquarters,
Boston," says: "Today authorised
parties will call on you, so please be
prepared to avail yourselves of this
opportunity for fifty cents to assist in
your mail delivery, which will be much
appreciated by Postoffice Depart
ment.*
This smooth individual called again
in the afternoon at the houses “where
he had left thfe circulars, and an
nounced that he had come to collect
for the box, which he said would be
put up within the next ten daya
Some readily paid fifty oenta, thinking
that it was a ruling of the Postoffice
Department." For the fifty cents
they were given a printed receipt,
signed, “W. B. Hacket, President,"
with a postscript, ** Positively no
money refunded!"
The postal authorities make no such
requirement of anybody, but of course
they have no obleotion to their pat*
rons having receiving boxes if they so
desire.
