The cow bellowed, and at onco
with a rush the herd gathered
and drove away the wolves.
The latter soon discovered an
other v eow and calf, and made a
dash for them, and, in spite of
the frantic efforts of the mother,
got the calf down; but again
the heard came to the rescue,
and this time chased the wolves
until they gave up the contest
and disappeared.

The organ of sight, which is the
source of so much pleasure as
well us benefit to man, is very del
icate. A great many peraonH, not
appreciating this, are using cheap
spectacles. These glasses, by their
imperfect structure and blemishes,
feriously injure and sometimes al
most destroy the sight. Hawkes’
Crystalized Lenses are the most
perfect glasses in the world, being
especially adapted for the preser
vation and sometimes restoration
of Abe sight.

A few (leys since three gen
tlemen left Adairsville fir their
respective homes North, Messrs.
G. S. Lockwood, of Rorkwood,
111., J. F. Hawthorne, Oregon,
111., anil D. A. Sioane, McGre
gor, III., who fought in the army
and on the Union side, mem
bers of a surveyors’ association,
Hervex Dix Post, No. 371, of
McGregor, 111. These gen
tlemen came down to go over
the battle grounds ill and
around Adairsville, and to carry
back any souvenirs of their visit
that they might so find. They
expressed great desire, as well
as curiosity to see a genuine
Confederate uniform worn in
service, and their demands
were readily acceded to, for,
upon being invited into the
parlor of tho'Stauton House,
there, “all tattered and torn,”
with bullet marks in plenty,
and a Yank’s bullet sewed to
to tho coal, proof that tho
wearer was wounded with ball—-
was presented to uiir old-timo
opponents a Codfederate Colo
nel’s uniform. They wero
pleased beyond expression, and
neat speeches, full of the bond
of the Union ami tho South,
were made by them. After
ward the souvenirs and an em
blem of the olive branch wero
given in the way of a piece of
this Confederate coat, in ex-'
change for a beautifully painted
badge of the Union, underneath
which were the words’ “Co. C.,
7th 111. Inf.”
