Paris, March 5.—OfllclaJ Informa
tion received here of the cyclone and
tidal wave In the Islands of Society
and Taumotu, shows the first reports
to have been greatly exaggerated The
report was sent to San Francisco by
steamer from whence It was cabled
to Paris. The report says the colonies
were devastated by a tidal wave aud
cyclone on February 7 and 8th and
that Tahlta In particular suffered.
Three hundred and twenty-seven
houses were destroyed In the Papeete
Capital Tahlta and one death resulted.
Tho two ships sent to Tuamotu Is
lands with help and provisions have ami were l>eing gradually forced into
the ground they would hear tin
thumler of the hoofs of tho oncoming
herd.
One-halt ot the warriors nt Pino
Ridge were seized with the Messiah
craze. They danced the ghost dance
and put on the ghost shirts. The one-
half stampeded from the agency, and
with it went Crazy Wolf, as savage In
heart us he was when he fought the
Pawnees.on the frontier of Nebraska.
Little Scar stayed at the agency.
One day rfter the battle of Wounded
Knee had lieeu fought a band of twen
ty Sioux braves broke away from the
main body for the sole purpose of raid
ing Pine Itidge agency and killiug the
chiidreu who were gathered In the
scboolhouse—the children of their broth
ers who bad .succumbed to the white
mau's ways. In tho band was Crazy
Wolf, his heart full of the lust of kill
ing.
Tho warriors came within sight of
tho schoolhouse. It stood on a bluff
and on one aide was absolutely unpro
tected. Crazy Wolf knew tho location
of the room In which the little ones
gathered daily at theip lessons. Tho
mounted warriors made a headlong
rush down the valley skirting the ridge,
aud as they whirled by the school thoy
poured volley After volley Into the
room where the children of the friendly
Sioux daily were assembled.
It was not the fault of Crazy Wolf
that on that day there was not a
slaughter of the Innocents. A teaphor
had seen the feathered beads showing
among the willows by White Clay
creek and, faking the alarm, had hur
ried tho children to tho cellar.
The raiding band went northward.
There was cavalry at the post to take
up the pursuit, nnd the fugitives suc
ceeded In roach fug tho mnin body of

time charts have taught the sailors of
the world where the tlunger lies und
how to avoid It, so that accidents rare
ly occur—Bever except through Igno
rance or a previous disaster that has
rendered a vessel unmanageable.
Several years ago the captain of a
sailing vessel, desirous of seeing the
famous whirlpool *at close quarters,
was assured by his Norwegian pilot
that he might venture near enough for
examination without danger. And here
is what Hie captain saw:
“I went on the main topsail yard
with a good glass. 1 had been seated
but a few minutes when my ship en
tered the dish of the whirlpool. The
velocity of the water altered her
course three points toward the center.
This alarmed me extremely for a mo
ment I thought destruction was in
evitable. But she answered her helm
nobly, and we ran along the edge, 4 the
waters foaming round us In every
form.
“The sensations I experienced are
difficult to describe. Imngiue an im
mense circle running round of a diam
eter of one and a half miles, the veloc
ity Increasing as It approximated the
center and gradually changing its dark
blue color to white, foamlug f tuinbJjng,
rushing tot its vortex, very much con
cave—as much so as the water in a
funnel when half run out. The noise,
too, hissing, roaring, dashing, all press
ing on the mind at once, presented the
most awful, grand and solemn sight 1

eighteen minutes and In sight of it two
hours.’ It Is evidently a subterranean
passage. From its magnitude I should
not doubt that instant destruction
would lie the fate of a dozen of our
largest ships were they drawn in at
the same moment. The pilot says that
several vessels that had become un
manageable have been sucked down
nnd that whales have also been de
stroyed.”

Crazy Wolf, when he saw the sur
render of his brethren was coming,
mounted It!* pony and made for the
Rad Lands. TT«* foresaw the end of the
uprising and the complete subjugation
of his people, aud he laid It at the doors
of the tepees of the Sioux who had re
fused to Join the braves on the war
path.
Crazy Wolf made up bis mind to kill
Little Scar. lie nearly starved In the
Bad Lands, and his pony was dead. A
week after the surrender he started for
the agency on foot. His ammunition
was gone, and he had uothlng but Uls
knife. He ate willow bark and roots.
Hunger took Ills bodily strength, but
bis heart purpose was unweakened.
Crazy Wolf, starving, lay on the bank
of the White Clay creek. The tepee of
Little Scar was only 300 yards away.
Craxy Wolf was famished, but he lay
there in the bushes waiting for night
and vengeance. He looked down to the
water's edge, nnd there he saw a little
girl with a willow basket full of food.
The little one looked’up and saw the
famished eyes of the warrior. She
smiled at him nnd held out her basket.
Crazy Wolf knew his strength was go
ing fast. It might not last him till the
hour or revenge. He ate the proffered
food. The child was molding clay.
Suddenly she turned and offered Crazy
Wolf the mold of a peace pipe. "You
Have eaten.” she said; "now snfoke.”
Crazy Wolf took the pipe and blew’
an Imaginary cloud of smoke away
from his Ups. The little oue smiled at
him again.
"Whose child are you?” asked Crazy
Wolf.
“The child of the great warrior Little
Scar," was the answer.
Craxy Wolf bad eaten the bread of
Little Scar and bad smoked the pipe
of peace. He had never broken a tra
dition of the Sioux race.
Craxy Wolf walked Into the agency,
tod a little child was leading him.—B
