Trying To Destroy
Democratic Tarty
Tom Watton, Hoke yfimith and the
• Atlanta Journal .are doing ail they
; can to destroy the Democratic party
In Georgia. Aud what does It all
mean? We can see nothing in it but
mania for office, and let the results
be what they may. In other words,
office at any cost. (They say: “No!
Nothing of the kind. Great and vital
principles are involved, and must be
solved.” They' talk and rare about
disfranchisement, railroad domina
tion, etc., but when the whole matter
is sifted down, there is nothing In it
but Watson’s* desire to disrupt the
democratic party, Hoke Smith's am
bition for office, and The Atlanta
Journal's hope to' crow over the At
lanta Constitution. So, In all candor,
we ask, if the democratic party in
Georgia is going to tolerate this
foolishness or stand sponsor for It?
We know many good and well mean
ing people are being led oft Into this
folly. Bui is it not time f to call a
hilt and notice where they are drift
ing? We honestly think so. The
disfranchisement question Is the
wildest vagary, and only a political
catch-penny for the negro In Georgia
is already under the white primary,
completely disfranchised, and the
issue now is simply bringing him to
the front, and will do no good what
ever, but is calculated to do very
great harm. Therefore, down with
this nonsense! |
They say, however, that the Rail
roads are dominating the State, and
everything is going wrong. We do
not believe this, and they do not
either. Georgia Is in better, or as
good, financial condition as any state
in the Union, and is growing and
prospering as rapidly as any of them,
and If the calamity howlers can be
kept in the back ground, the state
will continue on this high road of
prosperity. If we will only reflect,
and look back to a few years -ago
when Tom Watson, Seab Wright and’
their kind, not only in Georgia, but
all over the United States, started
out on the war path for spoils of
office, what a mighty panic and de
pression followed In the wake, it
might causq some to come to their
senses now, for we must remember
that all of this calamity howling
bodes no good to any one. I will not
tend to build up the State; It will not
bring any investors nere, but on the
contrary, will keep them away.
We believe in regulating the Rail
roads, and our State Is already doing
this by its commission, which is
from time to time strengthened, and
we have as good freight and pas
senger rates . as any of our sister
States; in fact, Georgia was the first
Southern .State, we believe, to estab
lish a commlslon for this purpose, and
in a short time we are satisfied the
railroad situation will be beyond
serious criticism. Wo do not think
the railroads should be treated un
fairly, and we do not think the people |
wish It done. None of us are saints.
We all have some faults, so In what
we do, let us be fair. The railroads
are helping us more than they are
hurting ns. Look at the millions of
dollars which have been spent In rail
road Building In the South fan* a
good deal of It right here In Georgia)
In the past few years, and behold tho
many new plans and projects on foot
to continue this building and railroad
extension, and yet we hear a great
hue and cry against the? railroads,
led by Hoke Smith and his crowd. If
our people can be made to see that
it is to their Interest to sit steady in
the boat and act with sense, and drop
all this “Tommy rot,” and let Hoke
Smith, Tom Watson and bis gang go
to the rear and oblivion, this grand
old State will continue on the high
road to prosperity. If wo yield and
fall in with the. “Howlers," we, of
course, must accept the result of our
tcKy. We believe in progress, and we
think the best people of our State,
when they ponder tho matter fully,
will say: "let us progress and not
go backward."
Waycross ought to feel at this time
the full force of these reflections. The
railroads are making her prosper as
