turn their attention to the situation
Springfield in their own state, where
incendiary mobs have been firing the
houses of negroes, forcing the occu

cock, Texas, appointed by a Republi
can administration Is county commis
sioner elected as a Democrat, a Jus
tice of the peace elected as an Inde
pendent, and Is a public school trus

The above card is from those whose
fealty and friendship I do hot for a
moment doubt. Nor do I consider it
egotism to say that I feel quite sure
that I could have been nominated for
the state senate from this district had
I desired to make the race.
In reply to "Many Citizens” howev
er, I desire to say that I will not be a
candidate for senator. I cannot afford
the pecuniary loss It would cause me
nor can I take the chances of embar
rassing a single friend. The honor
of being a Georgia Senator Is a great
temptation, but under existing
circumstances I am forced to releg
ate this laudable ambition to the
rear.
The many pleasant things which
have been sa> I about me In this con
nectlon during the past few months
and the many personal promises of
support, have been highly appreciated
and the mention of my possible candi
dacy fiaa made a delightful episode
in life which can never be forgot
ten. In regard to the senatorshlp
from this district, however, I desire
to say that there Is a ronn in Way-
cross more entitled to the honor than
almost any of us. For forty years he
has stood by the Democratic ship in
this section and on numerous occa
sions has assisted in keeping her off
the breakers. His wisdom, conserva
tism, and good judgment, together
with Jhia ability, devotion and un-
swerving party fealty, have placed
him at the head of the list among
those who deserve recognition at the
hands of the party. So far as I know,
however, this worthy gentleman, this
Democrat of Democrats*’ wants noth
ing and asks for nothing. I refer to
Judge J. L. Sweat, and were it In my
power, with all the grace that age
hns spared me, I should tender him the
senatorial toga and feel that I had
