Atlanta, March 5.—-Although under
sentence of eighteen years In the Geor
gia penitentiary for blowing a safe
at Sharon, Ga. George Bartoon Jho safe
cracking expert who was recently ar
rested in Birmingham after his sensa
tional escape from the penitentiary, is
nojv hold by the United States author
ities who will take him to South Caro
lina for trial on the charge of blowing
open the post office safe at Pelzer In
that state. The Georgia authorities
made no attempt as yet to take him
away from the Government officers.

Appling. Bulloch, Camden, Coffee, Jen
kins, Emanuel Screven, Bryan and Ef
fingham will get theirs from th'e camp

On motion of Mr. Hale, nt 12:20 the
senate took a recess until 1:30 p. m
to permit the notification committee
to perform Its duties.
A 1:30 o'clock the senate rceassemb-
led and Senator Ballinger announced
that tho president .would immediately
send in a communication. Tho presi
dent's aalstant secretary Instantly
appeared with a list of nominations, in
cluding hose for cabinet positions, and
on motion of Mr. Aldrich, the senate
went into executive session.

Philander C. Knox, of Pennsylvania,
to be secretary t state.
Franklin MacVeagh, of Illinois, to be
secretary of the treasury.
Jacob M. Dickerson, of Tennesacc, to
be secretary of war.

York, to be attorney general.
Frank W. Hltcock, of Massachusetts
to be postmaster-general.
George V. L. Meyer of Massachusetts
he assistant secretary of the navy.
Richard A. Ballinger, of Washing

CpL. N. M. PAFFORD DEAD.
Col. N. M. Palford, a well known law
yer in this section, died Thursday
night nt his homo at Nlcholls, after an
Illness of about six hours with acute
Indigestion. Previous to bis fatal Ill
ness, Col. Palford was apparently in
best of health and attended court at
Baxley tho first of the week. Tho re-
mains. Accompanied by relative*,
ed through Waycross last night on
route to WiUacoochce, and the funer
al and Interment occurred today at tho
Palford grave yard-near tljat place.
Col. Pu fiord was about 55 years old
and loves a~^ifo and several children,
Ho was the only lawyer at Nlcholls,
and by his kind, gonial disposition
made friend* with all whom he came
In contact. Several years ago Col
Palford wrote a poem on the Hurri
cane Creek wreck, which' occurred near
Blackshear in 1887, that attracted con
siderable attention.
