MADE
GOVERNOR BROWN HAS
GOOD.
\V<* are reproducing a portion of
Governor Hrown'a announcement of
two years ago for the benefit of those
who possibly (?) have forgotten It,
and the reader can take It up and sat
isfy himself. If he wants to, as to
whether he has made good. At the
time this was made, the "reform” ele
ment was ploughing Its deep ditches
which came near overthrowing tho
State, tho campaign against "foreign
capital" was hearing Its perfect fruit,
and the great (?) governor of Georgia
was going at break neck speed with
his "doctrine of reforms.”
time, to call a halt, the oppression was
gotting to bo too strong, the common
peopleywcro groaning under those
“reforms," nil of which prompted the
present governor to respond. In the
course of his announcement at font
time he said:
“I will candidly confess that 1 do not
rialm to have beep gifted by Provi
dent-'* with an orator’s voire, whereby
I could l.o h'*ard by throng in tho
o-'cn nlr or in large halls. In the pres
ent condition of affairs, it Is my can
did convict ton that the Inboring mas-
rea of o»r state whether in factorial
or rim?’*, or on ;ho farms, need p; as
perity rather than oratory. In truth
|t is a* ore that a figure of *p to
say tint the time lies come when
Georgia should disassociate borsch
from the aristocracy of oratory and
clasp hands with the democracy of
deeds. Hence, in this campaign I will
not undertake to make political speech
ca. but will seek to bring about that
spirit of sympathetic accord and co
operative endeavor which would again
secure employment, with fair wages,
to those of our fellow-cltlpen* who aro
now unwillingly Idle, whoso families
are deprived of the comforts of l'fo,
and to restore s»\cli good confidence
In the good faith of our state and her
officials lu guaranteeing to pJary dol
lar Invested in the state equal protec
tion of the laws ns will attract to her
tho capital needed to develop her re
sources of every character.
"If elected to' the exalted office of
governor, 1 pledge every energy of
my nature to the upbuilding, and de
velopment of this great state and tho
restoration of prosperity to all of her
people."
Now, in all candor, has not the pres
ent quiet, conservative administration
of affairs been fruitful of splendid re
sults? Governor Brown has set an
example, for hie opponents are now
adopting hi* tactic*. What greater
tribute could be paid to hit methods?
- Conditions In Georgia today aro all
that could he asked for. Do we want
to swap them, especially for the con
ditions of two years ago? We have
TRAVELING MAN’S VIEWS.
Brown will be the next governor
of Georgia, and will carry the atate by
25,000, is the prediction of J. W.
Adams, a well known commercial trav
eler, selling dry goods for a Baltimore
house. Mr Adams is stopping at Lanier
House for a few days and talked in
terestingly yesterday of the political
situation in reference to the guberna
torial race, which Is now on, and wax
ing warm a* the date of the .primary
approaches.
Sir. Adams has just bee 0 over south
Georgia, visiting Waycross, Dawson,
Americas, Douglas, Balnbrldge, Thom
asvllle and many other points in that
section of the state. He stated that
•i erywhere he had been the sentiment
for Brow 0 was strong, and In several
cases, fie told of men who were for
Smith In the last election, but have
changed and are now for "Little Joe."
—Telegraph.
If Mr. Smith's ambition is to be
United States senator, his actions
within the paHt few weeks have kill
ed his chances an. dead as the prover
bial door nail. He stands absolutely
no chance to be elected governor of
Georgia in these days of prosperity
and good will. We repeat, we regret
Honorable Hoke Smith’s advent into
the race for governor of Georgia.—
MtyllMon Advertiser.

One hundred thousand white per
sons are disfranchised in Georgia by
Hoke Smith's registration law. No
other state in the Union has such a
drastic law. Why should we be Im
posed upon Just to please Mr. Smith—
