TAFT’S VISIT TO PANAMA.
Washington. D. t\, Nov. 4.—-Prest
dent Taft on hi* vUit to Panama, will
consider the-solution of great prob
lems confronting the United States.
The two most pressing of t.iese will
be the annexation of Panama and fho
fortification of the canal.
The government under the Hay*
Mona Yarilhi treaty guaranted Inde
pendence to Panama. President Taft,
it is known, is not willing to saddle
his administration wth the burden of
a defenseless republic*
Three solutions have been consider
'd. First, for the United States to
take over Panama and run it as fed
oral territory.
Second, to widen the canal zi
twnenty-five miles on either side of
the canal, taking in (lie cities of Pan*
ama and Colon and other strategic,
points and give back to Columbia all
of the territory east and Costa Rica
nil the territory west.
Third, to appoint an American ad
viser to the Panama government.
President Taft is inclined to favor
the latter plan, under which American
consuls all over the world will look
after the interest of Panama,
The Ifttle republic has hee n spend
ing money with a lavish hand on pa
latial government buildings and main
taining foreign representatives in a
style all out of keeping with the reve
nue raised.
It has been realized that something
must be done quickly.-
