Relative to the man ner of selling such lands, etc., as sented to 13th December, 1866/' Apparently tho Georgia Orphans Homo did not mulerialixe and the land reverted to thft Stato. For we find In ISH'J an act of legislature was passed, authorizing the sale of the Okefenokee Swamp to the Hewanee Canal Company. A company incor porated under nurne act, by Frank W. Hull. Marshall Phillips and his as sociates, with u capitul stock of one million dollars. Tho purchasing price was not to bo Iosb t Imu twelve and one-half cents per acre. An Interesting fact is that the State reserves a right (which exists today) to a royalty of one'dollar per ton on auy phosphate rock that might be worked in the swamp. The above mentioned company went to work on their great plans lor draining the swamp and the canal may yot be seen, near Folkston. But the expense was apparently too great and the company eventually went In to the hands of a receiver, who la ter sold It to the Hebbtrd Lumber Company, and this company recently sold the cypress timber rights to the Hebbard Cypreaa Company, now op erating their Immeuae cypress plant at Waycross.—This Is the present status of tho swamp.
