A French chemist claims to have
made n practicable alloy containing
mote than !tn per cent magnesium, a
feat that has baffled scientists for
generations.

Is there really nothing new under
the sun? Hero conies Piof. Jane
Fnles, director of the department of
textiles and clothing of tho Teachers*
College Columbia University, and de
clares that false hair Is not n modern
invention and that ‘Tats** were worn
by Egyptian women G.OOO years fl. C.
So our cherished illusions are put to
smash by the Iconoclast scientist. It
now remains for someone to prove
that the hobble skjlrt and balloon
pants were common at tides of ap
parel with tho blushing maidens of
the stone age and that rolling pins
and sad Irons were used then ns now
for taming refractory husbands. Rut
let us hope not. That would destroy
the last vestige of our claim to orig
Innllty.
Governor Plnistod. Maine’s n*
Democratic chief executive, In a re-
cent Interview said: “The young men
ot Maine amt the rest ot the country
•won’t lie slaves of parties as their
fathers have been. That was the
one nationally significant fentv. e of
the Maine election—the promise of a
successful future for American gov- I
eminent in Maine ami out of It.. The |
young men of tho country can’t be }
delivered; every party will hav.* t«
make good its promises to keep their
support. 'Soli l" states will get more
and more uncommon In the next few
years." A great truth well put, a a
shown bv the recent elections. About
the only state which hung on the old
rfgime and tin* old boss.** was Penn
sylvania: but the leaven is working
here. too. and the emancipation Is
but a matter of time.
The League of American Sportsmen
for the Preservation of Wild Life Is
sending out literature all over the
country urging the enforcement oi
laws, where they exist and their en
action. where they do not. fo: it.'*
preservation of birds end gam? fi.di
from wanton slaughter. The fe.iA.-e
points out that .the use of the auto
matic or machine shot gun is largely
responsible fur fhis shameful killing
of the Insectivorous and song birds,
iind ssks that laws preventing the use
of such arms for hunt lug be passed.
They ought to be on the statute books
of every »tat,> in the to « u. When to
woman’s pride and the dealers cu
pidity is added the bloo^'hlrsty In
stinct of man. it will not be long till
the wild bird of life of the country
will become practically extinct—a
state of affairs which, from the mere
ly utilitarian point of view, would re
sult la the loss of Incalculable mil
lions to the agricultural interests of
Jthe country.
TYPOGRAPHICAL ERRORS.
Speaking of typographical errors in
newspapers. James R. Tanner, of
New York, a former printer anj news
paper man, who was seen at tho Ar
lington. said: "Two articles had been
pre pared for a New York dally,
containing a, sermon pleached by an
eminent divine, and the other about
t»e freaks of a rnad dog. Unfortu
nately, the foreman, when ‘making up’
the forms, ‘mixed’ fuem. producing
an article which ran something like
ihJs;
"The Rev. James Thompson, rector
of 8t. Andrew s £huAch, preached
to a large concourse of people last
Sunday last. This was his last ser
mon. In a few weeks he will bid
fare well to his congregation as bis
physicians advise him to cross tho
Atlantic. He exhoited his congrega- j
tlon and after offering a devout prayer
took a whim to cut up some frantic
freaks. He ran up Timothy street j
to Johnson and ran down Benefit j
street to College. At this stage of j
(he tfiocee^lngs a couple of boys [
relzed him, tied a tin kettlo to his
tall, and he again started. A great
crowd collected, and for a time there
was ft grand scene of noise, running
and confusion. After some trouble
lie was shot by a policeman.’’’-
