New York, March 9.—Stamp col
lect© s and dealerK from many parts \
of America are In town to bid for I
the many rare varieties to be dispos- *
ed of at the sale today, and lasting ]
three days, when one of the finest
collections of stamps of Great Bri
tain and her colonies ever brought
together, that of John P. Stanton, |
will be disposed of.
The stamp that Is exciting most at
tention Is a $500 Canadian variety, a I
lightly canceled copy of the rarest
of Canada postage stamps, «ne 12 j
cerfts black, of the Issue of 1851.
Another feature of the sale is the
one-shilling scarlet vermilion of New*
foundland, Issue of 1857, which Is I
valued at $375. British Columbia and j
Vancouver are represented in the I
collection Dy a copy of the rare five I
cent rose of 1865, valued at $110, and I
Nova Scotia by two canceled copies j
of the one shilling reddish violet, Is-!
sue of 1851, valued nt about $100 I
each.

well knwn golf experts havo arrived
here to take part In the seventh
nual spring tournament on the Pine-
hurst links. Play in the tournament
will begin tomorrow and continue
through the remainder of tho week.
Tho tournament will serve as an
introductory event to the annual Uni-
ted and South Amateur Championship,
which Is to be held here later in the
month.
