April 7.—In signing tfro Smith liquor regulation bill this afternoon. Governor O’Neal sounded “taps” upon statewide prohi bition in Alabama. The bill was pass ed by both branches of the legisla ture Wednesday and Is a companion measure to the Parks local option act. The chief executive also approved the Montgomery commission govern ment bill,, and appointed as Mont gomery commissioners W. A. Gunter, Jr., B. Josephs, C. McIntyre, Walter R. THE KNIGHTS OF MODERN MACCABEES The Knights of Modern Maccabees held a fine mooting last night, and Fit Knight Giilon and his team taught a would-be. Knight tho myster- of the Order. A great deal of important business was transacted and arrangements made for a special 00 days contest for increased membership. On Juno the 1st this order will cel ebrate its thirtieth anniversary. It icing among the oldest orders In America, and a special effort Is being made all over America to make a rec ord increase In Its membership, and Waycross Tent will do Its part. Last year at groat Camp, Wnycross Tent, received the lisnno- for tho largest per cent increase in 1910 and the boys hopo to dp better In 1911. A special initiation rate has been adopted during this contest and they want at least 100 new members. ELKS INSTALL NEW OFFICERS The B. P. O. E. Elks held a Jolly meeting last night and with imprca sh o ceremonies duly Installed the newly elected officers. Mr. L. B. Harrell was Installed as Exalted Bu- and now heads tho Order of Elks In our city. * Mr. Harrell Is the popular manager of the Coco Cola Company and Is a prominent young business man and the Elka aie to be congratulated In securing him as their leader. The full list of officers show that a conservative management will con serve and maintain tho high reputa tion thi* Order has secured In Way- cross, as the “Best People Oh Earth.” Tho Waycross Board of Trade met yesterday afternoon to hear a report from Postmaster C. E. Murphy and discuss tho question of dosing tho delivery window of poet office on Sunday's. Mr. Murphy explained u| on all over the country, and the at Department had requested him to seek tho opinion of the public and see whether tho delivery department of the post office at Waycross should he closed on Sunday's, The United States government are adopting tho 8 hours movement' in all tho depart ments, at request of tho Union men. And they can only make it possible in tho post offices by discontinuing tho Sunday deliveries. Tho proposed plan will .only require three men instead of fourteen at tho pc.at ofllco working on Sunday, and these three will only have to he there long enough to get the mail In to tho boxes. The matter was pretty thoroughly discussed. Judge J. I,. Sweat sug gesting that perhaps it might work a hardship upon the working people who got their mail on Sunday. Mr. Jasper Wylding took the position that the workingmen would probably npprovo the plnn, ns they were henr- tlly in accord with the 8-hour a day plan for ail classes of work nnd 3,ould willingly suffer some slight in convenience to see tho 8-hour a day gain ground.
