The court pro ceedings. it is expected, will be brief ns the accused youth has already made n full confession of the crime. Attorneys a it pointed by the cour conduct the defense will make an ef- f.tn to save the young German from the electric chair on the ground of his weak mentality. The murder of Marie Smith was ore of the most shocking crimes ever perpetrated in this section of New I Jersey and aroused the community to a high pitch of excitement. The mu tilated body of the little girl was found in tho woods‘near Ashbury Park on November 13 last. She had been missing from home several days. Sus picion at first pointed to Thomas Wil burns, a negro woodchopper, ns the r'ayer of tlie child. He was arrested and for a time there wero fears of a lynching. Later he satisfied the an- horities that lie had nothing to do with The crlmo and was released. About the same time young Heidomnn was taken into custody, but as no positive evidence was at hand lie also was released. On March 15. however, Heidomnn was again arrested and under examination made a complete confession ami offered to plead guilty His arrest was brought about by a detective, who had gained his confi-< deuce and had traveled about with h:m for months. , .
