Joseph M. Brown, governor and au
thor, was born at Canton, Ga., Dt
cemher 28, 1851. Ws father was .Jo
seph E. Brown, Georgia’s famous
I governor, and hi3 mother, Elizabeth
Gresham. After graduating with first
, honor from Oglethorpe unlveilty, ho
chose the legal psofesslon, but while
pursuing his studies at Harvard his
eyesight failed. For years be was
general traffic manager of tho West
ern and Atlantic railroad, and was
afterward with the Seaboard. 3ttl
later lie became a member of the rail
road commission. From this office he
was dismissed by Governor Hoke
Smith, on account of an Issue which
rose between them on port rates. The
result was that Brown entered tho
race for Governor against Mr. Smith
and defeated him at the Aext election.
Tho weilder of an accomplished pen,
he published in 1886 a "History of the
Atlanta Campaign,” which was fol
lowed by a historical romance enti
tled "Kcnnezawr Bombardment.” But
his most pretentious work is "Astay-
nax", (New York, the Broadway Pub
lishing Company, 1907), an early epic
of America, in the preparation of
which he spent thirty-five years of
diligent research into Aztec and In
dian antiquities and in the opinion of
scholars, the work is a masterpiece of
archeological lore and romantic Ac
tion. Ho married February 12, 1S99,
Coi-a A. McCord. His country homo
is near Marlettta, on a plantation
which was once owned by Governor
Charles J. McDonald.
