The farther Mr. Taft advances through the weit the cooler It gets. * Don't despair over the cost of llv- lng. It'll soon he butchering time. * Mr. Taft is like the re*t of us, ho ts having hii ups and downs, but mostly downs. After thinking it over in the light of experience William H. Taft would rather be judge than President. —+— After glancing over Oermany, Thom* as Edison doesn't think he would take It in'trade for the United States. Mr. Taft is doing the talking while the yet unpunished trusts continue to do the thinking. .fr - Possibly Senator LaFollette will disclose In hh autobiography where he achieves fiis truly remarkable pom'* pftdour. 4* It wn* decidedly unkind of Canada to throw tho harpoon into reciprocity just ns Mr. Taft wus starting on a little Joy ride. * Argentina with the largest battle ship In the world, should not be too anxious to demonstrate on Us nolgh> hors. 4- If the powers would hurry up and parcel out Africa they might disarm them, a! there would be nothing left to fight about. Alaska has had an earthquake, hut it will take more than that to jar the Guggenhelmi loose from those coal beds. * Eruptions in Mt/Etnn caused a loss of 150,000/)u0 but tr.o natives didn't stand aro\ind admiringly and say to ^ThTwestT&Th^outh; It bag been a hard matUc to ua- der»tand why the t#> o**emlgratlon or colonization has kiwa}4 been west ward instead of southward. It Is due In part, perhaps, to the fact that the transcontinental rail* roads have advertised that section extensively and have offered Induce ments to settlers to go in that direc tion. Be that as it may, there Is no rational reason why this should con tinue. The south offers better duceraent-*, naturally than any other section. Yet we rarely hear of any Southern railroad system advertising this section or making efTort to bring settlers in this direction. They ap pear to be content with what hey get and to let matters stand as they are. Thia is notwithstanding fact that of course the increase of population and consequent develop ment attendant thereon would great- ly Increase the value of their proper ties. The south is the better country to live in than the West, both from a climatic and material standpoint. The South is capable of great develop ment, agriculturally and aong every other line. In fact its resources have scarcely been touched, the land bare ly scratched as it were. It is as yet thinly populated, too much for best development. What the south needs is advertis ing, and tho offering of inducement! to settlers to come this way. In this the railroads could be of tremendous assistance, but they seem to be lack ing In enterprise In that direction. They ought to be stirred up, and urged to do their duty in that direc tion. There is no reason why the tide of emigration should not be turned this way. Certainly there is no opposition on the part of the people. Strangers who come to live among us are most hospitaly received, and- they are given every opportunity to increase their posesilons and live in happiness. One of the mala troubles Is, that the at tention of settlers is not directed in this direction by those most capable of doing it effectively. Let the south ern railroads wako up and do as the transcontinental railroads are doing. There would be a dlyerent state of agalrs If this should come to pass.
