A signed statement from former |
Governor Joseph M. Brown relating
to the current campaign for the gov-
ernorshlp appears elsewhere in this
paper. It will be read with Interest
became Mr. Brown is a candidate for
the successorshlp to Gov. Smith and
because he Is known to go directly
to his point in discussing public af
fairs. Nor has he atlered his style
In the present instance. He . talks
with perfect plainness and Impresses
the reader with a sense of his sin
cerity.
‘ He believes that the liquor Issue,
so far as it relates to the present
campaign, Is a false Issue and should
Have no place In the discussion. There
is no Legislature ■ to be elected this
fall. Tho term of the present Legis
lature runs for another year.
Jectlng -the liquor question into the
campaign therefore* would necessar
lly have the’ effect of' bringing about
any change. It will bo the privilege
of the Legislature to say that the
status should remain as It is until
the people have declared themselves
with respect to it.
There Mr. Brown makes a strong
point. He asserts that the liquor
question is going to be an issue cam
paign after campaign until the peo
ple themselves decide it at the bal
lot box. Would it not be an excel
lent Idea to let them have the priv
ilege of expressing an opinion now:
The question Is with the State Exe-
cullvo Committee. -The commltteo
can make tho issue plain and direct
by putting on the tickets, “For Pro
hibition," and "Against Prohibition.’ 1
Such a ticket in the primary would
have the effect of taking out the per
sonal element and putting the mat
ter right -up to the people themselv-
It would not be a question of
Joe Brown or Dick Russell, or Pope
Brown, in so far as the liquor ques
tion Is concerned, but the question
Itself. And while the current Leg
islature might not feel that It was
bound by the result of the election,
the chances are that It would not
fall to respond to the will of the
voters as expressed at the polls,
tho question is voted on in the pri
mary, it will bo settled by the white
people of the state and by them alone.
seems to be reasonable and logl
cal to roquest the Execuitve Commit
tee to let the people vote on the
question and thus dispose of it.
Mr. Brown suggests that there be
close Inquiry into the management
the state's nffairs during the past
ear. He is not sure but that there
may be found good ground for criti
cism on that lino. Again, he criti
cises the Executive Com nltteo for
its refusal to call a primary to ‘select
candidate for United Statos Sena
tor, and lm lias a word to say aoout
Gov. Smith’s holding on to one office
er ho had been elected to another.
On the wholo Mr. Brown’s state
ment makes very interesting read-
i plain, direct, forceful,
leaves nothing to be guessed.
