The 1 competition is open to Southern poets.' SKETCH OF MR. STANLEY. *Mr. H. M. Stanley Is A son of the late Cept. IUdlln A. Stanley, who was the flrst # solIcItor general of the Oco nee Judicial Circuit, and who was Or-* dlaary «of Laurensr county at the time or his death. ‘ He is a native of Laurens county and In the prime of bis life. For the past twelve years he has been editor of the Courier-Dispatch, and was edl tor of the Courier prior to this coo Eolidation of the two paper*. Mr. Stanley some years ago estab lished the Southern Knight, a month ly magazine published In the Interest of the Knights of Pythias, and edited It for several years. Having a fondness for military tac tics, Mr. Stonloy Joined the Dublin Light Infantry v.hea It wn3 organized and was made first lieutenant. Later ho was elected captain of the Hast man Volunteers and was then appoint ed by the Inte Govor^or W. Y. Atkin son a member of his military staff and served for four yenrs aa llouten- ant—colonel and alde-dc-camp. was nlso for several yenrs connected with tho military branch of the order of Knights or Cythias as an officer iu Savannah Company No. 10, first lieu tenant and adjutant of the first bri gado and captain and adjutant of the first regiment, Mr. Stanley hns been a number of times a delegate to state, congression al and senatorial conventions. He served as chairman of tho democrat ic executive committee 2>f the Six- teenth Senatorial District several years and served for several years a member of the democratic execu five committee of the Eleventh Con grcssionnl District. For a number of years Mr. Stanley has taken a prominent part In the af fairs of tho Georgia Weekly Pres* Association and In 1907 was unani mously elected president of the as sociation. After serving for two years ho declined re-election and has since boen corresponding secretary. Always taking a great deal of In terest in educational mntter, Mr. Stanley served for seven years as a member of tho city board of educa tion of Dublin and for threo years was president ot the board. Some years ago when the city council abol ished the old board of ten and created ne, Mr. Stanley and one othdr member were the only ones retained. elected n member of tho first board of directors of the Carnegie Li brary In Dublin nnd served for sever al years and then resigned. In Au gust ho wn again re-elected ancMi uow a member of tho board. Mr. Stanley has taken a groat deal of Interest In secret fraternities and is now an officer of the grand lodgo of ono of tho lending fraternities of the state. This Is Mr. Stanley's first eptry In to atate politics. He hns consented to mako the race for Commissioner of Commerce and Labor at tho call of his fellow countrymen and will make aggressivo campaign for the of fice. «j» Boston is a queer town.
