WAYCR08S, GA„ NOV. 2, 19 1. As ft publicity setter Dr, Wiley bids fiilr to rival Mr. Itoosevelt. «J* Tho President's row is making a great tour also. She lifts, however, no vetoes to defend. dice against submitting the prohibi tion question to the people of Geor gia. We will not asaume that the state executive committee turned down the sensible proposition simply because Ex-Governor Brown made It (lores where Trappe, tho Homo of Home Run linker, Talbot county, Ma ryland, gets on the map. + Taft is 2,000 miles from Salt Lake and one year nnd four months from Halt River. * Why not put Ty Cobb In the cabl net, and have a government ol sports? The West doesn't want to make Mr. Taft feel had until It hns to In 1912. * It must ho hard for n candidate to jdead for un honest election when he knows It will defeat him. .j. Nine men are now on the McNama ra Jury. It takes three more to nil the panel, They may be forthcoming in a few days. * Joo llrown says he wants all laws enforced ami It looks now ns if ho would have an opportunity to help the Job along. * Kx-Governor llrown is still In favor of the people settling the liquor question, not by voting for candidates, tut by voting on the question Itself. —Columbus Enquirer-Sun. * Mr. Taft, however, would not go so far as to say that Mr. Roosevelt dug the rannmn canal with his own little shovel. That srould be too much' like child's play. We do not believe that grown men would be actuated by such mo tives; so*we nrefer to think that the majority of the committee thought that the, issue should to fought out by the candidates and that the* elec tion of a local option or prohibition candidate would Influence the result in Georgia. Hut when this question is compli cated by personal politics It cannot be said that the Issue Is satisfacto rily settled. Personal following, geo graphical location, rank partlsiauship, all will influence and complicate the issue aftd the state even after the election of governor will be,no near er the-solution of the question than they were before. If tl^e people wen* y • wed to vo*e on thj Issue In *i clean-cut, open way, the election would have gfeat Influence upon de terminating the future course of the state. If the Issuo of prohibition were to prevail, - then It wouffl bo only fair to say that the present law Uld have to be strengthened and lhero would he no cxcuso and no chance for some cities to openly flaunt and defy the taw In future. If, on th<^ other hand, local option triumphs, then wo should return to the former stntua of letting each coun ty In Georgia determine for itself tho rules for regulating the manufacture nnd sale of liquor. Nothing could be plainer nnd nothing more sensible. It w-ould be proper to submit these questons to n primary election m order that It m£y be settled by the white ( voters of tho state. It is true that nothing is settled which is not settled right and any solution of the liquor question which is not backed up by a vote of the people at the polls wUl fall short of being decisive nnd permanent. This was the method ndopted In Alabama and Texas and Maine. The people of Georgia have novor voted upon this question and It is high time tho issue be put be fore them. It is also true that.tho members from the sninller counties on the ex ecutive committee voted against this question because they feared tho big cities would roll up heavy majorities for local option. They wnnted to thrust tho county unit plan between the people and the Issue. Tho com mittee adopted the rrunty unit plan in nominating a governor and it did not seem to be willing to submt this prohibition question straight to tho people. Rut some day It will have to be done and tho sooner wo come to It the better. You can't block ull tho people all tho time. Tho majori ty pole In the end must avail and in this Instance It looks as If the popu lar vote ought to prevail. Some day- the Issuo Is going to be settled that voy, and why not now? The people have a way of registering their will aud of arriving at the result and first last this Issue must be pronounced Independent steel concerns In tho upon by the people themsclv south have formed a $30,000,000 com- — ■ ■ ^ bine to fight the trust.
