Hitch, who has been In the forelgt missionary field for some time. The letter will b% of Interest to the many friends of Mr. Hitch, and the Herald publishes It In full below: Cboon Chun, Aug. 27th., 1911. Dear Mamie:— I rocelved your letter and certainly was glad to benr from you, but It came just as I was about to get o« my horse to start to Hong Chun to hold tho Quarterly Conference for that circuit, so I bavo not had tlmo lo answer before now. I hasten to do so now, for fear that I may be too hits, although If I waited a few days, that is until I got my report of my year’s work mado out, the Information you ask for might be fuller and more com plete, But as I said, fearing it mlgut be too late I am sending what T can gather and will try to get a copy ut my report offl to you laterT My work and responsibility ought to be lighter next year with Bro. Brannon and a doctor to share them with me. I certainly will be glad of this tor I have had about all I could stand up under, and It has told upon me. I feel It very much now as I a,n closing up my yean work. ' In regard to the figures you ask for; my district is made Up of three circuits, which coutsln two counties each, making my work extend over •lx counties. The last census glvos the population as 205,104. One way my work la 500 11 loitg and 400 11 wide and I suppose that there Is about 15, 000 square miles. The highest mountain Is said to be 4,5f>0 feet, so I suppose, alhough - f have no way of finding out exactly, that these passes around Choon Chun must be nnywhere from 3,600 to 4,000 feet high.' Some are very long, one on the way to Hal-Man la 30 11 and some of them, too, are very, very eteop, the road winds backwards and forwards up them In the shape of oork screw. When they are covered with snow or. when the ground frozen, ft Is real dangerous to go up them. I have often had severe falls going up and down them when tho snow was on the ground. I have 16 native helpers under me, but I will not have so many when I turn Bro. Brannon's work over to him. Bro. Moose reported 410 members last year and I have baptized 119 this year so you see we have aomethlnt over 500. We hare'about 300 proba tioners and anywhere from 600 to 1,000 adherents. Have 37 establlahed groups and a number of others that, I Visit hut have not yet establlahed a church. When we talk about the Choon Chun work, we must remember that It Is a new work, as It hBs been only about throe, yeara since Bro. Moose was shut up In the station building houses. What I need most of all Is help for my school. My Idea in the school work Is to push two things, religion and Industrial Instuctlon. As I see it that Is the need of the people Just now. They do not need higher educa tion, they need religion to cure their sins and work lo cure their laziness, I could get the hoys If t could get a place for them fo live and eat, and a school and funds with which to run it. My Idea Is that we hare got to de velop thO old Methodist Idea In Korea of tho work done by a local preachor, First Waycross—Railroad company. himself at the sometime. The peoplo for a long tlmo to come will not he able to have a regular pastor In every church, so the' work must. In moat cases, be done by a ministry that U able to take care o( ttsolf, and If they are going to do tble we mast tesch then! n trade. f think I will take one of my young er preachers who has remarkable skfll with bis band, and send him up to Beonl to the Y.
