MUSICAL RECITAL
WAS BIG SUCCESS.
The Pupils of the Prestyterlal Institute
at Blacksbear Show Great Improve
ment.
Blackbhear, Ga„ March, 27,—
On laat Friday evening the second
_ recital by the pupilt of the music
department of the Presbyterial
Institute was given before an ap
preciative audience which filled
the hall in which the entertain
ment was given. Since the last
recital the girls have improved so
r much aB to cause the pleasantest
p comment by those who heard
both efforts. This speaks volumes
for the thoroughness of the work
done by the Institute and for the
success of the efficient teacher
they have in Miss Fisher whose
work is praised not only by those
who are her pupils but also by
those in neighboring towns who
have made the effort to take ad
vantage of her instruction.
The following girls took part in
the recital: Misses Maud Grady
Feuri Hatiiff, Maud McMillan,
Ella Gregory, Bonnie Woodard
Jewel Moate, Laura Quartermau,
Ernestine Purdom, Edith Lott
and Ada Williams. The two last
named are from Waycross. That
they collectively and severally did
well was theouly expression which
came from tlioBe who heard them.
Miss Fisher added to the pleasure
of those present by several songs
which were heartily enjoyed. Her
accomplishments were gracefully
and happily rendered by Miss Me
Duffie, also of the Institute faculty.
The Institute has recently re
ceived from the ladies of the Home
Missionary Society of the Presby
terial church of Waycross quite a
liberal contribution of books and
magazines. These swelled the
number of books in the library to
more than 60C volumes—not a bad
showing for the friends of the
work there. ,
Mill Mary Weston off Waycross
was the guest of hep' sister the
evening of the recita^F,
Miss McIntosh oiJ oston is vis
iting Mrs. B. D. Br/ ,tley.
Plans for the new buildings at
the Institute are beiug considered
and it is hoped that work on them
will be pushed so that they can be
occupied by fall.

A Much Dreaded Fir*
The man eating fly of Central Amer
ica inhabits the low lying coast re
gions and Is much dreaded by the na
tives for the fearful results which fol
low its sting. Naturalists call It Lu-
cilia bomlnlvora. The average speci
men is about a third of an inch long.
It has a big head, with the eyes on
top. Its cheeks arc a golden yellow,
Its abdomen dnrk blue with purple
bands, its legs black, its wings unusu
ally big, and they produce a continuous
and loud bussing when In motion.
The person bitten by this fly gets a
disease called myiasis. It generally
begins with an itching of the nose;
then that orgnn swells nnd bleeds, next
it becomes ulcerated, and in these ul
cers may be found the lnrvie of the fly.
The whole face becomes swollen; ery
sipelas sets In, followed by meningitis
and death. Ono man I knew, said a
traveler in that country, shot himself
after he bad been bitten rather tlmn
face the tortures he knew were cer
tain. Cure is difficult. Subcutaneous
injections of chloroform sometimes do
good, but as often fail. One man I
heard of was cured by lemou Juice in
jected into his blood.
Ten Years Abo and Now.
There is no better antidote for de
spondency than to take a measure of
your own community as it was ten
years ago ami as it is today, unless
you live in an unrepresentative and
stagnant community. You will lie
likely to And the roads or the streets
better than they were, the railroad
service, the postal service, possibly
i the telegraph and the telephone
sendee better. You will observe better
houses, more attractive grounds. The
people are better clad or more are well
clad. Inside their bouses you will find
more books or, better, more bathrooms,
better lights and letter furniture. A
larger proportion of children nnd youth
are receiving good training at better
schools. All tills means more than
prosperous yearn. It means a higher
level of life nnd a stronger ambition.
The well being of the people qf the
United States is rising higher and es
pecially is it diffusing itself wider.
Life is constantly becoming more com
fortable nnd more cheerful as well ns
longer nnd safer, lending to better con
ditions for intellectual growth nnd so
cial development.—World’s Work.

Couldn't De Mistaken.
A Derbyshire squire recently invited
some London friends down for a little
shooting. One of the sportsmen, after
shooting for three hours without suc
cess, was considerably annoyed by the
keeper in attendance on him repenting
after every miss, "1 can’t be mistaken,
surely.”
"For goodness sake, be quiet!” he at
last shouted. 4, Wbat do you menu

"Well, sir,” was the reply, “If you

Few persons knew how very useful
soapluds prove when employed as ma
nure. Applied to tho roots of vines,
fruit trees, roses, etc., they Impart a
vigor and a rapidity of growth which
are perfectly surprising. No one who is
so lucky as to have a garden should
waste this valuablo form of manure.
It Is an excellent plan to have a large
tub and put the soapsuds and dirty
water into it till required npon the
garden.
