U.D.G.’S WILL HAVE
EXCITING
Savannah, Ga., Dec. 21.—If
the Daughters of the Confeder
acy decide to call a special meet
ing of the Georgia division for
the purpose of reconsidering the
determination to place the Wirz
monument at Richmond, the re
consideration will not come up
until there has been a most inter
esting meeting of the division.
Mrs. N. li. Harrison, the chair
man of the committee having in
charge the procuring of a loca
tion for the monument at rieh-
mond. is a hard fighter, and she
and her committee aru thorough
ly aroused, as was evidenced by
the circular which has been sent
to all the chapters in the state.
It is expected that every purlia
mentar.v law which can he invok
ed wil he used by those opposed
to reopening the subject if i
decided to have this special con
vention.

FIVE CHARGED
WITH SHOOTING.
Five young men have been ar
rested uml released on bond for
the alleged shooting at Beach
Friday night, the warrants for
their arrest having been sworn
out by Mr. Leonard Taylor, fath
er of the young lady shot during
the raid. They are two Sweats
two Lees, and a Smith. They de
ny the charge against them, hut
it is said that they were seen to
gather both before and after the
shooting Friday night.
' From information received
here it appears that the yonng
men wen- taking out vengeance
on the town of Beach because one
of their friends had been charg
ed with earrying concealed weap
ons alter coming up to answer to
a charge of drunk and disorderly.
Three buggies arc alleged to
have been used by them during
their two visits to Beach. The
first visit was early Friday night,
and the second about 9 o’clock.
Miss Maggie Taylor, daughter of
•Mr. Le oiiiird Taylor, was serious
ly injured during the first raid.
Site was with a party of four
men when the rioters began.
Deputy F. M. Young went up
from Wayeross and made the ar
rests. The affair created consid
erable excitement, and it is said
that over five hundred shots were
fired by the rioters.

Governor for appointment os so
licitor-general of the Brunswick
Circuit to succeed Col. John W.
Bennett, whose term expires on
the first of January. It is report
ed from Brunswick that there
will be no candidate from that
city for the office, and the opin
ion is expressed by Brunswick at
tomeys that Col. Lambdin will
be the appointee.
There is some difference of
opinion as to the Governor's au
thority to make an appointment
in this instance. It is thought,
however, that he has the right
to fill the vacancy in this office
that will occur January 1st. Col.
Lambdin bus been endorsed al
ready by member* of the. Ideal
bar, und his friends are hopeful
that the Governor will appoint
him. Owing to the partnership
xisting between the present so
licitor, Col. John \V. Bennett,
and Col. Lambdin, it is under
stood that there will he no con
flict between them in the matter,
and that it will be satisfactory to
Col. Lambdin in the event the
Governor should hold that the
present incumbent should con
tinue in office.
Saturday afternoon n deal was
loseil in NVnyeross ut the offices
f Wilson, Bennett & Lambdin,
whereby timber privileges for a
tract of :)2,000 acres of land in
lmker county, Florida, belonging
to Col. W. M. Toomer, were sold
to Mr. J. R. Strickland, of this
ity, uml Mrs. Lydia Norman, of
Chicago, Ill. It is understood
that the consideration in the deal
was ubout $20,000, anil that Mr.
W. E. Sirmans, of Wayeross was
associated in the deal also.
It is Mr. Strickland's intention
to move his saw mill at once to
linker county for the purpose of
uttiug the timber on this tract.

Salem, N. C. Goddard was ar
rested shortly after ten o’clock
by a constable, the charge
against him being adultery. God
dard demanded immediate hear
ing, and same was set for two
o'clock this afternoon at the
court house.
When asked by a representa
tive of the Journal for a state
ment of the affair Mr. Bailey
said, in substance, the following:
That lie married the woman
known as Mrs. Chas. Goddard in
Baltimore, Md., on May 5, 19U8,
when not in a condition of mind
to form u contract j that he Bai
ley, had brought proceedings for
the annulment of this marriage,
and received a signed statement
from the woman that he did not
know what ho was doing when
the ceremony took place , and
that lie would not have done so
had he realized what he was do
ing. The annulment of the mar
riage was to have taken place at
the December term of Forsyth
county court at Winston-Salem,
but owing to the fact that God
dard threatened to make the wo
man fight the case for alimony
and had employed council for the
woman he had to hold up the pro
ceedings to keep down publicity.
Goddard’s attorney mnde Bailey
a proposition to settle for a thous
and dollars easli, which was
promptly refused by Bailey. God
daril then got very bold, and sent
word from Charleston by a negro
named Mathews that he God
dard, was fighting the ease, and
had employed counsel, and unless
Bailey wired money at once he
would send the woman to Win
ston-Salem and make public the
affair. The negro Mathews in
formed Bailey upon his return to
Winston that the woman had
begged Goddard frequently while
in his presence to desist from
fighting the ease hut that God
dard refused to hear to it and in
sisted upon a monetary consider
ation. Mr. Bailey does not know
whether he will prosecuto God-,
ilaril for blackmail or not, hut
has the matter under advisement.
