Enteredl at the Port Office in Waycross as Second Claaa Mall Matter!
FRIDAY, DEC. 26, 1908.
WAYNE COUNTY TO BE COMMENDED.
In these (lay* when lawlessness is no common, when it is a>.
frequently the cane that the citizens of a place feel called on,
when a crime is committed, to take the law into their own handn
and see that summary justice (or injustice as the ease may be) is
meted out to the person accused »f .the crime, it is pleasant for
a paper to be able to comment on the tactathat under great prov
ocation, the people of a place kept their senses and acted the part
of law abiding citizen*. It is so ofton true that a paper feels
called on to condemn the. form of lawlessness whioh finds its ex
pression in lynch law that it is refreshing to be able to comment
on the reverse slulo of nffnirs.
The people of Jesup, had they been of that lawless temper,
might have found excuse for such an outbreak of mob violence a
few days since, when n young man who had lived in the town
practically all of his life, who was knpwu to be an upright, hon
orable man was shot down without warning by two men one of
whim was himsell s>vorn to uphold the majesty of the law.
Thf case, as reported, sounded like one of the blackest crimes that
beuj been known in the annals of this section for some time. And
yel to the credit of the people of the town be it said, the law was
allowed to take its course, the accused men were arrested accord-
inatd law add carrleA’to, jail', where they arc now awaiting tin
aeiip'i of the grand jury and of the courts. IV ho w ill say that
th]ipjnple of Jesjip are,'not better off today Tor their self posses,
siiih j mien trying circumstances, for their obedience to. law and
fowycyir respect for-the courts! > '
I fiuorgia now ranks second in tho Union for the number of
lynching* eommittdd. It is not an enviable reputation for n
slab- t . have and our people should redeem their name .from
i.u«k a black charge. As it has been expressed by an eminent
Ir.wynr, .‘.‘Lynching attempts by a new crime to punish a past
