iTOROSS JOURNAL FRIDAY, JAM. 6,1809. THE WAYCROSS JOURNAL Ert*rad at tha Poet Office in Waycros* a* Second Class Mall. Matter OFWCIAL OMAN WAKE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS. ft FRIDAY, JAM. 6,1809. 1 w 'CTais« WOBD or ADVICE. Now that the good times have retained to the country and wc sD look forward to a permanent prosperity and to a return to the large volume of business which characterized the days before the panic, it might be well to stop and think for a moment of the valu able lessons learned in the days of stress and depression. For despite the evil of those days and the suffering the panic brought to onr business men the dark days were not withbut their wholesome lessons. The panic was brought on in the main, we all concede, by the minipulations of the high financiers of Wall street Tnit no careful observer will deny that there were certain conditions in the days of prosperity which wore eslculatod to bring about -trouble sooner or later, without any help from Wall street finan cier* or any body else. And the main lesson, it would seem, taught by those days of stress and anxiety, is eautlon in the transaction of business. The faet that many people were living beyond their means in those ante- psnic days and that the merchants were all' too eager to sell goods «m credit without arranging any definite time for the payment of .the account, was no doubt largely largely responsible for the trou- Silotia days of 1908. The Journal therefore, urges caution in this vnstter of giving credit. A merchant should exercise care in this natter which is vital to him, and to his creditors and his customers. A man living in the city, well known here, responsible financial ly, has a right to ask and to receive credit at the hands of a local ncrehant. Hut the floating population, here today and gone tomor row, leaving town between daylights oftimes, people whose finan cial responsibility is not known, constitute a source of real dan ger to the merchant who is unwise enough to sell them goods on credit. If they cannot pay cash for what they get, then a mer chant doe* not want their trade, vacancy on his shelves and an ac count on his bonks as a result of a sale like that is certainly no bon- efit.to the merchant. No sound business man wants that class of -irado. Let his e'ompctitor have it and welcome. This (s written in no spirit of criticilm of unfortunate men -who may get into difficulties and havo to ask for time. Such a per son is due as much consideration a« the merchant feels he can afford to give him. Hut in making a sale of this kind, it is well to stop nnd calculate whether one can afford to lose the amount of the sale in the event the account is not paid.
