are in St. Louis this week looking
after the interests of the state in
regard to making an exhibit at the

Georgia is making a war of ex

system of county management for
instance.
The recent election in Atlantic
City of Chief Joyner,of Atlanta, to
the presidency of the Internation

deserved honor, and the citizens
of Georgia are justly proud that
their state furnishes one so com
petent to fill this high position,
No more Sunday playing of

enactment by other states of a

improving the morals of our coun

’ In the death of Rev. Richard
F. Powel, Jr., who, with that pu
rity of spirit and that consecration
born of a child of God, labored
with so much christian zeal, faith
and earnestness,for the shoft space
‘of six weeks in our midst, winning
the love and respect of his church
‘members, the affection and devo
tion of our children, and the es
teem and admiration of our eiti
zens gcner'ully, we, the members
of the Monticello Presbyterian
church, have sustained an irrepar
able loss, for
“*None knew him but to love him,
None knew him but to praise.”
Mr., Powel, with that devotion
to a lofty ambition found only in
one who strives to attain life eter
nal, ‘to know God and Jesus
Christ, whom He has sent,” ad
vanced his Master’s cause in this
place, and his service as a pastor
was marked by a continued spirit
ual growth and development,
He fulfilicd faithfully the duties
of his station ; he used to the utter
most the gifts of his ministry; he
found the one noble trait in peo
ple; he loved with the love of God
even the unthankful and evil;
“*He was content to be a fountain
in the midst of a wild valley of
stones, nourishing a few lichens
and flowers, or now and again a
thirsty sheep.” -He did this al
ways and not for the praise of man
but for the sake of God.
“God works in a mysterious
way his wonders to perform,” and
strange and inexplicable indeed is
this blow of the Grim Reaper in
cutting down one so full of prom
ise and future usefulness. Yet
men shall say of him ‘‘His heart
and brain and tongue formed such
a perfect trinity, that only what
was good was kindled in the one,
and only what was great the other’
formed, and only what was beau
tiful was nttered by the last.”
Therefore, as a token of uurl
love and esteem, be it resolved
that the above tribute be spread
upon the record of the Monticello
Presbyterian church as a perma
nent memorial, and that a copy of
the same be sent the bereaved
family with whom we sorrow and
with whom we pray “Thy will be
done.”
