Negroes Have Hard Luck
Who Went to Liberia.
Brunswick, Ga., Nov. I.—The
fifty-six negroes who left Irwin
courty last IPebruary for Monro
via, Liberia, under the Ilcader
ship of B. J. Scott, are now" re
ported to be in a destitute con
dition, and Congressman Brantley
is using his efforts to get the ne
groes back to the United States,
they having gone from his district.
Since they left here twenty of the
ntumber have died. ‘Thirty-six
still remain in a sickly condition,
The matter has been taken up
by Hon. John Hay, Secretary of
State, through the egorts of Mr.
Brantley, and the following letter
which was received by him a few
days ago was forwarded to Mr,
Brantley in this city:
“Legation of the United States,
Monrovia, Liberia, Sept. 23, 1903,
~—The Hon. John Hay, Secretary
of State, Washington, D. C.:
Sir——l have the honor to inform
you, that in the month of I'ebru
ary, of the present year, a party of
fifty-six colored persons, consist
ing of male and females and chil
dren, left Irwin county, Georgia,
as emigrants for Monrovia, Liber
ia, under the leadership of one B,
J. Scott,
“Upon their arrival the Liber
ian government did its best to as
sist them in overcoming the rigor
of the climate, and in supplying
them with some food until the land
which had been given could pro
duce something for their suste
nance,
“Since then, however, twenty
of the number have died, at
‘Cheesemanburg, the place assign
ed them by the government, lor
the lack of homes they were all
:pnt in a housc of two rooms,
‘where they died one after the
other, with the fever, from want
os food and medicine,
“Thirty-six of this number still
remain in a sickly and destitute
condition. Sixteen are still at
Cheesemanburg. Twenty two
have returned to Monrovia,
These are ragged, starving and
homeless. Five of these will re
turn to the states by the first
English steamer to Liverpool, on
or about Oct, 1, 1903, their trans
portation having been arranged by
friends in the United States.
‘““l'here being no provision for
relief in cases of this kind, we had
to help them from our private
purse. We soon, however, dis
covered that we could not give
much charity-two persons for any
length of tima, for food is scarce
and the prices are enormous.
“Owing, your Excellency, to
the agitation now going on in the
United States, on the subject of
negro emigration to Liberia, by
irresponsible persons, whose liter
ature has wide circulation among
the innocent and poorer class of
negroes, the question becomes one
of gravity for the consideration of
both governments,
“I shall in a separate dispatch
transmit some emigration docn
ments and the result of an inter
view with his Excellency, the
President, and with other mems
bers of the cabinet,
1 have the honor to be, sir
your obedient servant,
Ernest Lyon,
