THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION.
The result of Wednesday's returns shows that Roosevelt won b.
a great electoral majority. The Republican national ticket ,
been clected by a vote of 343 in the electoral college against
for the Democrats, President Roosevelt carried all the Norther ‘ }
states but the solid south stood true to Parker and Davisy
The consolidated vote in Jasper was,—Parker 613; Watson 8
Roosevelt so. In the race for Congress in this district, Howarg
received 613 votes in this county against Hairston'’s sO. 1
PREDICTION OF THE SOUTH’S FUTURE.
Is there a man in the South today who can see far enough intds |
the future to predict what time and brain, and brawn wiil make
of this section of the Union? How many Southerners of thi
present day realize the rapidity with which the south is increas,
ing in population, in wealth, in all those essentials which go tg
make a country happy aad prosperous? .
Less than forty years ago the South was the theater of the
greatest war of modern times It wasin ruins, so to speak, with
thousands of its bravest and best sleeping soldiers’ graves, and
other thousands almost without the necessaries of life. '
At one full swoop $4,000,000,000 worth of property had been
destroyed. This was the value of the slaves at the beginning off
the struggle. But this was not all, There were hundreds of
millions of dollars worth of other property which had been swept.
away. In short, what wasonce a most prosperous and wealthy:
section of the confederation of states was bankrupt. ‘
‘ Look at'the South today with its $600,000.000 to $7,000,0008
worth of cotton each year; with its thousands of miles of railroads{%
‘ with its vast coal and iron mines; with its immense timber inter.
- ests, and a thousand other wealth producing agencies, agricul
‘ tural aud industrial. Js there another country on the face of thei
globe that could have shown such marvelous advancement in the.
’ face of obstacles that scemed almost insurmountable forty years
ago? ‘
t The South is the garden spot of the republic, and it is destined §
i to be one of the very richest portions of the world. The country
that can secure $700,000,000 a year from one crop alone cannot
fail to accumulate riches almost beyond computation.

fame await you.—From the Nashville American, X

' Mercy is never mushy.
Regret cannot uproot wrong.
Labor is the salt of our lives.
Doubts make a poor refuge from
duty.
It takes more than a fence to
make a garden,
A shallow man usually has his
soul in his skin.
There is no clear thinking apart
from clean living,
Man'’s noblest right is that of
giving up his rights,
Rest is religion's opportunity
for reinvigoration,
Present character is a prophecy
of future conditions.
Nothing blinds the soul quicker
than winking at sin.
He who loses no love for others
loses all life for himself.
Respectability may be quite dif
ferent from righteousness.
The worst blasphemy is that of
profession without practise.
.
In the divine scales a dime often
weighs more than a dollar,
The South will always remain
Democratic despite all objections.
