while the White Caps continue to
have things pretty much their own

Ix North Carolina the farmers
are again experiencing the trouble
they had last year with their cols

they are wild in their haste and

Dawson’s Golden Opportuniiy. |
The NEws learns trom a gentle~
man interested that Mr. W. M.
Hitt of Hitt & Co., cotten mers
chants, will be in Dawson wichin
the next week to confer with
our people in rezard to the build
inr of a cotron compress here. He
is the ventleman referred (o in our
‘ast weck’s issue who will take one
third of the stock in this enters
terprice, provided the other two
thirds are tuken hepe,
This iy the golden opportumity
for Dawson. It is a turning point
in her career. It our people will
grasp the opportunity our future
is assured, and soon ean we put off
our swaddling clothes and put
on the dress and graces of a city.
Will you do it, or will you allow
this opportunity, {i¥e so wany oth
‘ers in the past, to slip by unheeds
ed?
{ It is said that fortune knocks
once at every man’s door. In the
same manner she knocks at the
pates ofevery town. She is now
fairly shaking the gates of Daw.
son. Let us not repsl her, but
rather let us don our best apparel
and give her a gracious weleome
that will insure Ler continued
abod= amenz us,
t Men of Duawson, arouse and let
us have a town here second to
\nnn(z in Scuthwest Georgia, We
can have it and we must.
oky Nota Guano Factory ?
We learn that some of our farm
ers are earrestly talkine ‘about
orgavizing a guano factory in Daw
son. There is noney in the busis
ness as evervbody koows, and we |
would be g¢lad to sce the prujcu!‘}
take definite shapn. |
Last year the Americus Guano
Co. declared a dividend ot 92 per
cent. on the invesiment. Now il
you know anything hetter than this,
| wiy cointoit. It certainly enns
' not be found in calico, shoes moat,

soid in this market,
| TFive millions of dollars are ana
bually spent by the fermers in
| Georgia {or a commercia] commeod
ity to increage the productiveness
iof their lands. Why not our home
people have a share in the big prof
its that are necessarily made out of
this large sum of moaey spent for
' guano ?
L e tollowing statisties, caleulas
,ted by Mr. Hugh Colgnitt, and
published in the Atlanta Tournal,
give the increase in guano sales in
Georgia for three seasous, ineluding
the present :
“The fertilizer question very
naturally has acitated the Farmer's
Alliance and the farmers generally,
208,000 tons were ingpected in
Georgia last year, and it is safe to
ray that there were 12,000 tons used
that were notinspected. This makes
220,000 tons of commereial fertili
zers uscd in this state. Averaze
| cost per ton §25, making over
£5,0600,600. This is ona ton for
every six people in the state, and
there is no doubt about the quanti
ty inercasing unless some obstacle is
putinthe way, Lost scason there was
a jump from 166,000 tons the pre
vious season to 203,000 tons, an
increase of 42,000 tons. This
enormous inerease caunged the dos
’nmnd to exceed the supply and
prices advanced at the close of the
season. The demand north and
west has been much larger than
ever before, and the factories start
ed this reason with no stck on
hand. It is very clear that the
manufacturers will be able to suss
t their prices.”
The Telephone Enterprise.
Captain Newman, ot the fele~
phone company, has just com
menced the cavvass for subseribers
to the local exchangs. Thisan en
terprise that we would he glad for
our citizens to take hold of with
interest. It will tacilitate Lusiness
and give to our city a metropolitan
appearance, as well asafford a geu
eral fire alarm.
It is proposed to build a neat and
cozy office over the artesian well
building in the ceutre of the city,
This being close to the city fire
alarm bell it could be easily «r
-ranged so that the fire alarm lel]
could be operated from the central
office, and the loeation of the fire
could at onee be known made to the
firedepurtment before they started
out. .
The nominal eost ot the instru
ments and the whole equipments,
aud they to be owned and controll
ed by the local patrons, isa feature
that commend it to all.
They asks no money until the
work is comp'eted and is satisfac
tory, and there is certainly no risk
to run on the part of ary of gar
people who may avail themselyes
ot the benefits ot the exchange,
It will take some time to get the
central cffice ready and mas
terial on hand for the lines, aud it
is vecessary that a certain number
of subseribers be obtained to ware
rant the going ahead with its cons
strug!ion,
Another of Dawson's Great Needs.
Mgr. Eprtor:—MW hile enumer—
ating the needs of Dawson you
omitted, in my ocpinion, one more
important than all mentioned. Nor
in saying this do I undervatue the
others,
But the greatest interest of eer
town demands that we chould have
a public school. A compress wil
give us advantages in f{reicht and
put us on eqnal footing with all
surrounding markets; a streot.
railway would be a eonvenience;
a telephone Jine would give fine op
portunities fir harrassing cur depot
ageut; a new ecourt-bouse would
add beauty to cur town and com
fort to our officers and jurors. but
a public school, well graded and
well einducted. would increise onr
citizenship, improve our financial
condition and benefit onr children.
Nothing could more materially
Lenefit us than this school.
Let us all pull together an? css
tablish a public schooi that will res
fleet credit on our tows and edu

the late Professor McNuliyy its
course was one of unusual suceess,
and it is- acedless to say was one of
the most i'nportant fuctors in the
upbuilding of our town. Its hich
standard of excellence and vseful
ness has been more than well sus
tained under the present manage
ment, and the chair made vacant
by the death ot its first president
could not have been better filled
than: by Prof. M. L ' Parker.
Professor Parker and the South
Georgia M. & . Collere have set
tled down on a solid foundation,
and are here to stay and to grow in
usctulness,
The college now has a daily at
tendavce of mnearly two bundred
pupils and at it ecommencement in
June will present the “‘sheep-skii”
to ten young ludies and gentlemen.
We'll be Satisfied
When “Jack the Ripper” g=ts kilt,
And Jim Guerry to Uongress caes.
When Dawson’s new Court-house
is built,
And those awnings torn away
from the storez.
Wien work on the compress i
begun,
Aud the Columbus Southern is
finished.
When people quit burning houses

And “negro loafers” from our

When we buy our tickets in a new

And have a fine city hal,
When subscribers wiill pay what.
they owe,
And notsay “wait 'till next fal).”
When our three new churches are

Dr. T. P, Parks. Dear Sir:
Many inquiries of your wherca

by your old patients, who say that
you are the only doctor that ever
