AN INDIAN IN THE LEGISLATURE. ‘
A Delegate from ike Penobscot Tribe mn |
" the Councils of the State ot Maine |
Augusta, Me., March 15.-One‘.
of the most interesting men in the"
Maine legislature this winter hns'|
been Joscph Nicola, a full-blooded
Tndian, duly accredited represents
ative of the Pcnobscot tribe.
There are two tribes of Indians in
Maine now, the Penobscots and
Passamaquoddics, each ot which
has a legally recognized organiza
tion, receives a bounty trom the
state, elects a governor and lieutena
aut governor every year and sonds!
a representative to the legislature, |
The status of these representatives
is Jike ‘that of the delegates to cons
gress from the territories—they
have a voice in the procecdings but
no vote—nad Joe Nicola has a big
bass voice that booms through the
corridors like a moose horn when he
addresses a committee on the claims
of his tribe, for the Indiaus are nev
er satisficd with what the state
gives them,
Representative Nicola says that as
wellashe can fizure it the state owes
his trike £459,000 for boomage rent
and other items, but he makes lit
tle progress in getting his c'aim
through. e, however, makes the
following proposition, apropos of
the agitation for the removal of the
capital : It the state will transfer
the seat of government toOldtown,
the Liome of the Penobzcot braves,
the original lords of thia part of the
carth acd whgre, Nicola says, the
state house really belongs, he will
agree to give back to the state half
of the amount of this claim, or oy.
er 8225,060.
Imagine a tall, broad-shouldered
man of middle age, with an Indian's
bronze skin, straight black hair,
sharp eyes and sober expression,
dressed in a flinnel shirt, trock coat
and slouch hat, walking up the capi
tol steps with the dignity of a sena
tor, and you have before your
mind’s cye Joseph Nicola, the rep
resentative of the Penobscot tribe.
He tulks well but never diffusely,
hins an average man’s acquaintance
with the dictionary, spells corrects
ly, writes a fuir hand and knows
Lig arithmetic. He was educated
like tbe vthcr Indians who are edu~
eated at all, by the Sisters of tle
Catholic church, who make their
cheerless home amid the squalor ot
the Indian tribe on O.dtown island.
Nicola is an observing man, and
while he has said little has done a
poweriul lot of thinking during the
segsion, and bas formed his owu es
timates of the lendinz members,
*“I think ex-Gov. Robie is the
roundest man in the House,” he
says, “but I teil you Joe Manly is
mighty handy.” The ludian reps
sosentative neverindulzes in fire
water and has hehaved-withas much
decoram as Deacon Ben Hill, the
sedate Androscoggin Semtor. He
took the ealks out ot hishoot heels a
duy ar two after he came here, and
has been a gentleman in every sense
ot the word.
Nicola, like most of the Indians,
s fond of politics, and what he
doesn’t know wbout maaipulating a
caucos i 3 not worth guessing at.
{1 & state fumous for its politicians

A Kice Business.
A lawyer in Chicago, the great
Alivorce mill of this country, dida
pretty piece of work a short time
ago. It seems that a certain Mr,
£Yordon left Clicago on a business
4gip to South America, with his'
wiie’s knowledge and consent, ex
peeting to be absent several menths.
As soon as he was out of the
way, his loving spouse went to a
iawyer, employed him to cbiain a
Jjvorce, and in a short time was
‘nformed that she was free, and
she straightway married another
man, only to discover in a short
#ime that she bad been deceived
by the lawyer, and the divorce
had not” been granted. It was
granted after a short delay, and
she was again married to her see
ond hushaxnd,
After six mouths Mr. Gordon re
turned from South America to dis
turb ber Jiappincss by an appeal
tram the court. The investigation
that foilowed biought cut the
facts narrated above and also that
the wife had never known on what
grounds her lawyer bad obtained
divorce.
The moral depravity of both wo
man and Jawyér must have been
great, but the laseally lawyer wos
the most dangerous to tke commus
nity, and should receive condign
punisiment. What kid of a law
is it that is allowed to carry oo
such a trade, and what kind of re
spectable people dues Chieago have,
anyhow?
Triflig with so sacrel a thing
~as marriage, we are glad to say, is
‘not one of Georgia's peculiar traits,
-and such proced ings are sufficient
‘to Dblast the repuiation ot any
'place. Chicago is a big city, and
| a wealthy one, but her morals are
litt'e better than those of the slunms
{ ot New York.
Walker County's Waite Caps.
The White Caps have appeared
in Walker county, and have be
come so lavless that the people of
LaFayette have appealed to the
Governor to aid in suppressing
them. A band of them have been
ridins the conntry at night tor sev
erat weeks, dispuised, and commit
ting outrages on citizens, and in
the case of one family set fire to
and destroyed their home. Saturs
day night they fearfully beat one
citizen of the neighborhood, and
threatened to kill him if he was
fouad in the county the next
night. As soon as he is furnishad
with the dates ot these outrages
the Governor will offer a liberal
reward for the apprehension of
the parties,

BE OF CGOOD CHEER.
To the honest inquirer after truth, whe,
troubled with some contagious blood dis
ease, secks a remedy which will com
pletely eradicate from his system every
germ ot bleod poison, that the oncs he
loves—bis wife and his children—may be
saved, the experience of others comes as
a mighty revelation. Common sensc tells
him actual results are the only surc proof
of curative virtue. Read the following
true testimony:
Twelve years afio I contracted a terri
ble case of Lloo poisoninfi. My afflic
tion was truly horrble. I had no appe
tite, did not sfcep well at night, my di;ics
tion was impaired, my throat was {ull of
ulcers, and in fact I was a total wreck.
I had been uader the treatment of several
of the leading physicians of Atlanta;
tried nearly cvc?' blood remedy adver
tised; went to Hot Springs, where I re
mained scveral months, receiving no ben
efit whatcver—the dread disease still clung
to me.
Threc years ago 1 was laid up with
rheumatisin. My knees were drawn up
in such a position that I could not leave
my bed for months.
Last summer the discase scemed to re
new its attack upon ms with all the ray
ages of death. My life was a lingering
torture, and I had despaired of ever got
ting well when a friend of mine recom
mended B. B. B. I Legan to use it at
once, and find myscli p.rmanently cured.
I refer to Rev. C. C. Davis, Dr. fl)!m G.
Westmorland, Dr, Knott, Garrett & 8r0.,,
and numerous others who know of my
case. 1 chéeerfully recommend B. B. B,
for I really believe it is the best medicine
for the Llood ia the world.
JAs. L. BosworTH, Atlanta, Ga.
During the month of February I bought
one bottle of B. 8.8 formy four-year old
boy, who had what doctors term” heredi
tary blood peison, and to my utter astan
ishment one bottle cured him. In Feb
ruary iny elder son, twelve years of age,
was literally covered with ugly sores on
his legs, and a terrible eruption on his
head. He was cured with two bottlcs of
8.8.8. Asa quick blood cleanser it has’
no equal. JAMES HiLL, Atlanta, Ga.
For scveral years 1 have been suff:rin
from a constitutional bloed poison, \vhicfi
has resisted the treatment of our best
physicians, and the use of the most noted
medicines,
I was covered with a co {)er-colorcd
cruption all over my body amf imbs, with
loss of appetite, excruciating pains in mr
back, aching of my joints, general debil
ity, emaciation, {alling off cfgmy hair, sore
throat and great nervousness. I became
incredulous, but being told that B. B. B,
was a sure enough blood purifier and that
it did not require a patient to use a gross
before he was cured, [ commencefir its
use. Within two weeks’ time I felt im
proved. I have taken about ten bottles
and feel 2s well and sprightly as any man.
My appetite and strength Lave returned
aad my hair does not %all out. Ido not
hesitate to say that B. B. B. has no equal
as a gencral filood purifier, and any one
who will use only one bottle will be con
vinced that it has no cqual in these parts
I still continue its use, as it is a splendid
tonic and keeps my system in a fine cou
dition. You have theliberty to direct any
sufferer to.me in person.
K. P. B. JoNEs,
Atlanta, Ga.
I had 24 running ulcers on one leg, and
6 on the other, and felt greatly prostrated.
I believe I actually swallowed a barrel of
medicine in vain ‘efforts to cure the dis
ease. With little hope, I finally acted on
the urgent advice of 2 friend, and gota
bottle of B. B. B. I experienced a change
and my despondency was somewhat dis
pelled. T kept using it untit I had taken
sixteen bottles, and 2l the ulcers, riseuma:
tism, and other horrors of blood poison
have disappeared, and at last [ am sound
and well again, after an experience of
twenty years of totture.
A, P, BrßuxsoN, Atlanta, Ga.
Krnnesaw, Ga,, Sept. 11, 1887.
B, B. B. Company—My DEAR SIR:
I take great pleasure in acknowled}ginz
the great benefit my wife has derived from
honr great and wonderful medicine, B. B.
. Fortwo years she was a great suf
ferer from Scrofula, or some l%lrood dis
easz which had lain dormant all her life.
We had attention from some of the most
skillful physicians in the country, but ail
to no cfgz-ct, until we had all despaired of
her ever recovering. Her mouth was one
solid ulcer, and for two months or more
her body was broket: out with zores until
she lost a beautiful head of hair, also eye
lashes and eye-brows ; in fact, she seeped
to be a complete wreck.
Now comes the great secret which I
want all the world to know: That three
bottles of Blood Balm medicine has done
the work which would sound incredible to
any one who did not know it to be so.
Today my wife is perfectly healthy and
clear from any scrofulous taint, and she
now has a three-menth-old babe, alsa per
fectly healthy, Very respectfubly
H. L. Cassioy,
GLEN ALPINE STATION, N. C. }
February 13th, 1888.
This is to certify that three {enrs ago I
had my left leg amputated four inches
below the knee, caused by blood poison
and bone affection. After it was ampu
tated there came a running ulcer on the
end of it that measured %}{ inches one
way and 4}3 inches the other, and con
tinucd growing worse every day untit a
short time ago. 1 was given up te die by
the best doctors in Charlgtte. | heard of
the wonderful B. B. B, ? resolved to try
that. My weight at the time I com
menced B. B. B. was 120 pounds. When
I had taken three bottles 1 gained 87
pounds in weight; when I had taken
twelve bottles F was sound and well, but
continued taking until I had taken fifteen
bottles. I now weigh 180 pounds and
measure five feet and three inches high
i contend that your medicine has no eti‘ual
3s a blood purifier. It certainly worked
like a charm. (12) J. R. WILsoN,
