in Boston is a man who eats nine
ty-six eggs a day.
It will be observed that the ne
groes so far have received no ree
ogrition from the new administra
tion.
Tae Birmingham News says the
convici question ought to be solved |
in Alabama, We would remark: ‘
Likewise in Georgia. |
CONGRESSMEN are complaining |
of poor pay. If they are so dissats ‘
isfied, why dont they step dovn
and ewt? Their plices can be
filled by as able men snd at the
eame salary.
CurrinG, the Texas editor who
put this country and Mexico a lit
tle at outs, has marriel his third
wife in Arkansas. His other two
wives are said to be happily mar
ried, too, to other tellows.
Tue United States government
has been informed that thousands
of people are starving and dying
from exposure in northern China,
the result of floods and drouth.
Financial aid is asked for.
Ox~LY a few short weeks and the
graves of the gallant sons who
shed their blood for the Confederas
ey will be covered with garlands,
woven into beautitul emblems by
the fair hands of women.
What About the Rocd Congress?
Terrell county should certainly
be represented in the road congress
to be held in Atlanta on the 22u.
of May The counties all aroun
us are making preparations (o send
men to Atlanta to represent them
in the discussion of the best
manner of securing better roads in
the state. Terrell has bad roads the
same as any other county, and
needs a change as badly as any of
them. Not a citizen has yet heen
talked with upon the subject but
who wants a change from the pres
eut system, butso far no cffort has
been made to appoint delegates.
We would again state that it
would be entirely proper f r the
county commissioners to make the
appointment.
Unrivaled Opportunities. '
Dawson. preseats opportunitiss
for the investment of capital, the
establishment of manuiactories and
industrial institutions and for la~
bor, common and skilled, that are
unusual and unrivaled. It is 1«
ready the leading manufacturing
poiut South of Macon. Nature
has helped this place bountitully- -
the people must now rise and help
themselves.
Dawson is coming to the front
and tak’ng her place with otherl
advanced cities.
For years when some of her
neighbors were being developed
her industries were almost entirely
veglected. But vow she is making
rapid strides towards the position
she should occupy, and not many
yerrs hence she will outstrip any
of her rival neizbbors.
R e
An Industrial Boom.
In its querterly report of the
Bouth’s industrial progress, the
Baltimore Manufacturers’ Record
says that the Southern boom this
year is awakening generally, and
that the South is at work in all
Jndyetries. Northern furnaces are
blowing out while Southern fur<
paces are multiplying. Southern
cotton mills are increasing and
new towns and cities are spring
dng up. Many cities and towns
are offering liberal inducements
and financiul support to industrial
anterprises of various kinds,
A Public School fir Dawsoon.
In last week’s issue of the News
“Citizen” suggested a publie schol
system for Davson. “Citizen’s”
surgestion was a_good one and a
timely one. There are now not
less than twe: ty-five towns in
Georgia with orginized systems of
public schools. These t-wns are
evidently awake to the mental and
moral interests of their chiluren, as
well as to the material interests of
thair ciiizens, |
Now, why not adopt the suggess
tion of ““Citizen” und add Dawson
to the list? Surely it becomes eve
ery citizen of the town to Jook to the
best iiterest of the same. There
is nothing which attiacts the notice
of visitors more or develops a town |
more than a therough system or
schools, Look at the towns :m-l‘!
cities where the pubiic schools are
in operation, how the people gaths |
er around them and help (levc-lupi
them. las not Dswson failed to |
attract many people tor the l:‘.ckl
of them ? |
Let us awake and look to the
interest of ourselves and posterity
by joining in the march of progress
Let every one interested in the
matter study over it, threw Lis
shoulder to the wheel and help us
move on in this direction. In this
course there is suvely great gain
and glory for Dawson,
Let those interested in their town
and educatiou spezk out through
the columns of the Nrws, which is
always wide awake to the moral
and mental advaocement of the
people.
e
The Color Line at the White House.
The color line, it is said, has
been drawn at the white house.
Mrs. Harrison, who is decidedly of
| a domestic turn, hes taken matters
be'ow stairs in hand, snd will ma
nipulate afluirs to suit herself, as
she onght to do.
One of her first reforms was to
institate an entire chanze in
the color of the servants at the
white house, Thischianze was not
eflected with the whitewnsh brush,
vor by auy chemieal applieation.
Mre. Harricon made the change
herself, substituiing whi e ones for
colared oncs.
The lady of the white house can
afford to be an indepenent member
lnf the republican party. Sheis no
Ipnlitici:m, and she can afford to
gratity her tastes us weil asher preju
dices. She doesn’tlike the brotherand
the sister 1 black, and she refuses
to tolerate them arvund the white
house merely beeruse she is the
l wife of a republican president,
Mis. Harrison’s objection to
( them is bused solely on their color,

Decoration Day.
Steps should be taken at once to
celehrate this day with proper sos
lemuities.
Our people, of late years, be it
said to their shame, are growing ens
tirey too cargloss of this matter.
Can it he that they do not appres
ciate the heroism of the men who
suffered and died in their defense ?
Let the good people of our city
get tozether and arrange plans for
celebration, and let one and all d
their utmost in coutributing to its
success,
Lol e
The Cencert
Ou last Triday evening for the
benefit of the Mothodist charch
building fund was a decided success.
Owing to the short time had for
preparation, the public was pre
pared to look over and excuse any
short comings, but the programme
was as elaborate and well carried
out as any similar entertainment
ever seen in our city.
About forty dollars were reals
ized.
He Was Dismissed. |
John Porter, the negro boy
arrested in Macon last Tuesday by
Sheriff Thornton on the charze of
assault and battery, stood his coms
mitment trial on Wednesday eve
ning. Owinz to the disreputable
character of the prosccutor and
lack of reliable testimony, the
prosecuting attorney'very properly
threw the case out of court. |
A Card,
It bas been reported that I keep
my house guarded at night tor fear
of soms of the people of this city.
In justice to myselt and the people
of the town ] denounce the states

Death.
The NEws regrets to chronicle
the death of the fourteen year-old
idaughtcr (* Mr. John Hemy,
THE REFORTOR!AL RAMBLER.
He Finds a Liitle News and Makes Scver
¢! Timely Suvggestions.
It has been suggest that our
court house sqnare be-planted in
gress and nice henezs be placed un
der the large osks, thereby giving
ug a lovely park. This is 2 splen
did suzgestion, but it would be im~
practicable just now. In huuling
material for our new court houstin
July the grass would necessari
ly be ruined, =0 it would be better to
wait and plant it atier our new
court house is erccted. It wou'd
then have to lie done after getting
the pernission of our county coms
missioners.
The lumber industry of Terrcll
county is a hig thing, and a large
portion of it is used rizht here in
Dawson. It would surprise our
readers to know exactly how much
lumber it requirs to keep the man
uinctories and carpenters of Daw
con at work. An old lumber deal
er tells us that over 30,000 feet
per week, 151,000 fiet per month
or wearly 9,000,000 fect per auv
num, representing a cash vaiue of
over $15,000, is used up here iu
Dawson. 1f this is not business,
what isit? :
A new Masonic Hall iz one of
the growing veeds of our city. The
old one iz a perfect hull and an
eye sore. Are not our Masonie
friends enterprising enough to
erect a handsome brick temple? It
could be erected en M. in street
with several neat stores underncath.
With three new -hurches, a new
city hall, new court house und new
Masonictemple, cur ¢ity would not
be excelled in haundsome public
buildiags by any town in Georgin,
Cannot the young men of Daw
son or_snize a Young Men'’s Chis
tinn Association ? Our town is of
sufficient size to warrznt a mem
bership of about seventy-five
persons. Such an organiz.tion
wou'ld be a great promoter of mor
al, intellectual and physical endow
ments inour town. Who will take
the initiative step ard give D.ws
son a flourishing Y. M. C. A.?
In the eastern part of Baldwiu's
ficld, near the residence of Mr L.
A. Lowrey, is a low, marshy, wet
spot that should recuive the imme
diate atiention of the hoard of
health. It has, for years, mudec
thatlocality more or less unhealt! y,
and now that the trecs have been
cut away it promises to he worse
this summer tlan ever. Some
steps should be taken to drain it,oe
1t will prove to be a regular bed of
malaria.
The Dawson Vuriety Mg, Co.
is a standby for the poor, wornout
news gatherer. Every week we
could tell our readers somathing
new and intercsiing about this
growing enterprizse. Nearly every
day new machinery is added and
some interesting and skillinl picce
of wood work is turned out. This
is one of the greatest industries in
Southwest Georeia,
A Scd Misfortune.
Mr. G. W, Rhodes who came to
our town from Pawson, Ga., a few
months ago, and has been engagad
in the mercantile business since
his arrival here, snddenly became
tot dly blind this week. His eyes
sizht has been tailing gradually for
several months, though he has not
experienced sny great inconvens
ience from it until within the lust
week or ten days, Last Friday he
realized for the first time that he
would soun be in total dorkness,
and, ere another week had dawned
upen him, his worst fears were real
ized, He le't last Wednesday fir
Atlanta to place himself uuder the
treatmwent of Dr. Calhoun. It is
to be hoped that he will be re~
stored. Mr. Rhodes i+ a d-serving
man, and by fair dealings and gen~
tlemanly demeanor has won the
confidence and esteem of all who
know him. He has o wife and
several small children. who are leit
without visthle means ot support.
They will go to relatives in Duwe
