OFFICIAL ORGAN OF THE COUNTY. i
DAWSEON,GA., Sepr. 4, 1839
Advertisers should remember !hati
the News is the Official paper of both
the Town and County Cfjicers, and
we guarantee gur Cireulation to equal
the combined ewreulations of the two
other papers publishea w the county.
TrE Brady bill has been reports
ed adversely by the committee on
agriculture in the senate.
Tris year citizens of Georgia
will pay iu taxes good interest on
the value of their property. The
state rate is 84 per thousand.
To build up Dawson our peoplei
must stick together like brick dust
to a bar of soap. There must be
no wrangling,quarreling or jealous
ies among them. |
WaEN SHAKESPEARE remarked,
*‘all the world’s a stage,” the thing
didn’t june as rapidly as she does
now. It Shaky wes on top to-day
he’d imagine himselt in a firstsclass
palace car.
This racket between candidates
Northern and Livingsten, in the
guberpatonialficld isquite previous
Each will bave time to make an~
other crop and then havea long race
for the governorship.

Montezuma Record.
From the remarks some of the
little politicians of the state are
making about each otber it would
appear that they were preparing to
explode @ small sized political dy
nawo. Somebody had better stand
from under.

Two Mormon emissaries were
picked up by the citizens ot Wars
ren county, and given the choice of
leaving the county or take a flog
ging then and there. They hus
tled, and when last seen they were
reratching dirt on an zir line for
Utah. |
Trne Hawkicsville News thinks
that Mr. Snelson, the Representa~
tive in the Legislature from Mer
wether county, is'displaying more
asinine qualities than can be found |
on the average Kentucky stock
tarm. His people ought to ask
him to come home.
It is said that the Senate and
house of Representatives hold op~
posite views on the all absorbing
question of the disposition of the
State road. The Senate leans to
the position that the sale ot the
road would be best, while the house
overwhelmingly passed the lease
hill.
Ll
To the esteemed council: Thne
stock law is not of much torce in
the eastern limits of the city.
We would respecttully petition that
you send your fleetsfooted and
nimble-bodied policeman out there
to run down aund impound the
defiant pigs and cows that inhabit
that part of the municipality.
“Jack THE PEEPER” is the latest
crazy freak of a New Jersey man.
Otherwise perfectly harmless, he
amuses himeelf by peeping into the
private apartments of diff:rent Ja
dies in the neighborhood. Asyet,
all efforts at capture have been
futile, and while the police are
centinually on the watch, his
nightly peeping crusade keeps the
New Jersey girlsin an uproar.—
What a pity some of them couldn't
.dose him with a decoction of red
pepper tea.
Ix the last few days several in
human brutes have been carried
heunce by the rope route for ase
saults on helpless ladies. These as
saults are beginning to be rather
common throughout the country;
and while summary justice is ul
ways meted out, it doesn't seem to
allay the crime. Our people should
always be on the alert, and at the
first note of warning leave no stone
untvrned to catch the guilty ones.
Acts of this kind should be stops
ed at all hazzards.
Little Jokey Kilrain
Has at last been arrested and tak

’ Give Us Kore Streets.
| While improvemente of all kinds
[ are going on in *Dawson, would it
- not be well for our city fathers, as
well asthe property cwners to
look to the beautifying of our
streets by wile ning, straightening
} and making new ones ? There are
| several blocks in the city a quars
ter of a mile square that shou'd be
- made smaller by new streets.
' There are a number of new
?streets needed in the city which,
if built, would not only prove a
- great codvenicnce, but would open
iup good building lots, and other
wise enhance the value of pro
' perty.
| Dawson is growing every day .
| Two and three acre residence lots in
i the city are becoming cumber
i some.
| Open up new stréets and thus
‘ aid the poor predestrian—the rich
‘ can ride on the street cars.
Fraud in Fertilizers.
‘ The commissioner of agriculture
has issued an order bringing the
! office of state chemist from Athens
|to Atlauta. This means the re
| moval of Professor White. [t
?gro“s out ofan analysis made by
Chim of some worthless fertilizers
sold a club of Screven county far
mers by John D. Weld, of Sa
| vannah. White's analysis gave it
a commerical value of §25,43.
The dissatistaction and suspicion
caused by the analysis indaced
Commissioner Henderson to sub
mit it to two expert chemists here,
and one found the sample of the
commercial value of $11.77; the
other $12.97, White claims in
defence that the sample sent hin
was mixed. His explanation has
not been considered satisfactory.
Further investigaticn, conducted
in Savannah by Inspector Woolly,
developed that the guano sold by
Weld to Screven parties had nev
er been inspected by the state, but
was falsely tagged. An order has
been isued for the prosecution ot
Weld, and the law provides for
severe punishment.
They Are Prospering. i
In answer to the popular asser
tion that the farmers of Georgiai
are constantly growing poorer, a
correspondent ot the Thomasville
Times-Eenteprise publishes the fact
that 100 Thomas county farme'ra‘
are worth §94, 965 more than they
were 10 years ago, In 1879 these
100 farmers returned property for
taxation at the aggregate value of
$139,005, and this year their re
turns amounted to $134,860. Ot
these 100 tarmers, seven have
grown poorer, and six owned Jess
thansloo worth of property each
ten years ago.
Though we have not investigat
ed thoroughly, we are satisfied the
farmers of Terrell county own cons
siderably more property than they
did ten years ago.
Come and Do Likewse.

Marriage of Mrs. Henderson.
On last Sunday Mrs. Ann’e
Henderson, wite of thelate Albert
Henderson,of Dawson was married
in Alouny to Mr. James Nelson,
of Brunswick.
The Albany News gives the fol~
lowing acconnt of the marriage :
The Hotel Mayo was the beau
tiful scene for the enactment of one
of the sweetest parts of life’s drama
and the charming Mrs. Annie Ma
yo Henderson and the popularly
koown Mr. James Nelson,of Bruns
wick, were the principal actors.
At six o’clock in the golden glory
of that rain-washed afternoon, on
the blessed Sabbath day, these two
lives were merged into one, just as
two pearly rain drops that had fall
en into the chalice of a flower.
The wedding was private, only
a few close friends and relatives be
ing admitted. The devoted atten«
tions of the happy groom had put
the city on the tip toe of expectas
tion for months, Eut the wedding,
Sunday, was a most sweet sure
prise.
