- A larger increase in population,
More new buildiogs cod work
of & better guality.

A healthier tone in business ard

The appearance of the husiness |

A Corn State.
Muny people have an idea that
becavse Georgia is one of the larg
e#t eotton producting States, it can
raize little cise. They torget that
Georgin is an empire within itself,
baving within its boundaries a
variety of xcil and climate that en
ables it to preduce almust every
grain and fruit commen to the tems
perate and semi-tropical zones,
Last Junuary the American
Agriculturist cffered a premium
of fivehundred dollars for the largs
est yield of corn onone acre of
land, This preniium was open to
the United Stetce. To further
stimulate the production of grain,
the Georgia State Agricultural So
ciety offered a premium of one hun
dred dollars for the largest yield of
corn on oue acre in Georgia, and
zn additionsl prem:iium of one hun
dred and fifty dollars if a Georgis
farmer should take the premium
oftered ty the An erican Agricult
urist.
Hon. W. L Peck. of Covyers,
took the premitm of one hundred
dollars, having raised one hundsed
srd thirty snd one-halt bushels of
corn on oue scre of land. He also
stards a good chance of taking the
premium for the best yield in the
United States.
This shows what Georgia can do
in the way cf raising corn, and. it
is a showing that it will worry any
other State to beat.

The Indiseriminate Shooting of Pis

Thete is complaint among the

such nizhtly disturbances and want

l There is a law in Georgia which
' makes it a misdemoanor to dise
‘charge firearms within fifty yards
\-ot a public road, but we never heur
of any prosecutions for a violstion
Lot the act, although it is violated
ll everv day in the year in Terrell
county. Perhaps a few examples

ment avd delight seems to be to go
about and burn powder to the an..

A Dead Letter. |
Tue law against deslers sellingi
cigarettes to minors is practicull_\"
a dead letter in Dawson. |
Not a day passes but that dealers
sell cigarettes which they know
are to bo given a few minutes lutcr]
to boys. So far there has been no
strict en'orcement of the law, as
there has been no complaint made.
~ The boys are bound to have
them and every body is selling
(them. They aska friend who is

lingiy vccedes to the request. In
a tew minates the boy will be
'(‘quippul with three or four packs

It is generaldy conceded that the
lawis a dead letter in Dawson .
At one of the leading places in the
city where cigarettesare so'd a boy
can buy them whenever he choos
les. You will hear the young tels
lows boasting ot the tact that they
‘can buy all they want openls at all
times.
Views of a Colored Man,

Don’t buy just for the purposze of getting a present. Take the goods
on their merit. If you don't think they are the best and cheapest you
can get, don’t take them. DBut it you do think so then take them, and
if you get a present you will be happy. If you dont you will be haps
py anyhow. Remember you must trade before the dth day ot January
in order to geta chance at those presents. Very Respecttully,
