SHOTK TROTTER'S FOURTH
Anmd éow He Observed It—A Cel«
. ebration Under Difficulties.
Bhuck Trotter, having *‘laid hy”
his corn on the third of July, was
lifted into such exultation by his‘
m turing prospects of a good crop,
that he decided to hold a sort of |
celebration on the Fourth. .
Throughout the neighborhood ofl
*Lick Skillet” Shuck enjoys that
peculiar leadership which certain
oddities of character frequently
grant a man who lives in a back
woods community. Those oddities,
however, are never of an intellects
val sort, for in Shuck’s neighbore
hood, a characteristic that is pure
ly mental is always rezarded as a
weakness, while a eertain “pranke
ishness,” particularly an ability to}
Jump higher and dance faster than |
any other man is italicized distinc
tion.
The celebration at Shuck’s house
can doubtlese be given most appro
priately, and I am certain most en
tertainingly, in the exact words ot
Zeb Finch, the brown jeans beau
of the *‘Lick Bkillet” heighbor
hood :
.When Shuck come over whar I
wuz_er eleanin’ up some new
ground fur er turnip patcb,” said
Zeb, ‘an’ told me er bout the cilly
bration, I sorter hung fire er bout
goin’; but when he ’lowed piuel
plank that Liza Baker an’ the Jims
izon gals would be thar, I told him
that nothin’ but er powerful mixt
ure uv the rheumatiz an’ cramp
colic could keep me er way, an’ I
meant whut I said, even ef Liza is
fat, an’ not ez pale ez the most uv
folks like to see a gal, Wall, when
T ariv at Shuck’s house I seed that
all the necessary preparation had
been made. It wuz too hot to stay
in the house, 50 a lot uv cheers an’
benches had heen put in the yard
under er low, spreadin’ mulberry
tree, that give a thick shade. Thar |
wuz er rizht smart sprinklin’ uv
folksy I tell you. Ole Uncle Mose
Gayner, that went to the Legisla- !
tur last year wuz thar. Uncle Mose |
ain’t much bigger er round then er
hodandle, av’ it do peer like that
when natur sot in to makein’ his
legs #he come mighty nigh not
stoppin’ er tall, but in spite uv a'l
these here drawbacks the ole feller
hae gota way uv smackin’ his
mouth when the jug is passed, that
gest nachully keeps him from fall
in’ into obscurity, ez the preacher
says, Ole Miz Gayner was thar,
too. I don’t think I ever seed a
fatter woman than she i, W'y,
she’s so much thicker then she is
high that when she wants to reach
up on er shelf after any thing she
lays down. The Jimison gals wuz
thar sho nuff, an’—ges hol’ my hatvl‘
smehody, while I think uv her—
Miss Liza, bless her fat jaws, wuz
thar bigger'n lite, un er average
hos. Don’t understan’ me to
mean any disrespeck when I com
par that lovely creetur with er
hoss, fur Idme tell you, the hu
man fam’ly will bave to improve
mightly befo’ it ketches up with
the hoss. 1
‘lt mouc not peer to le necessary
to speak about the sizes uv these
folks, but I'll jest say that weight
had er good deal tc do with the
tallness uv the capers that wuz cut
that day.
‘Old Shuck wuz in his glory, an’
‘lowed that the country’s birthday
should be cillybrated in er manner
that the neighbors wouldn’t soon
furgit.
‘How you goin’ to do it, Shuck?
says I. ‘We kain’t do nothin’ but
set er round an’ stuff overselves with
watermilons an’ sich.’
‘Don’t foo. yo'se'f says he, ‘l'm
goin’ to have some ’splosions here
airter while that'll lay all the fire
crackers an’ tawpeters you ever
reed in the everlastin’ shade. See
this,” takin’ er package outen the
pocket av his duster. ‘Here's two
pounds uv the finest blastin’ pow
der you ever come er cross. Air
ter we eat an’ drink er while we'll |
step out here an’ bore holes in logs,
load ’em up an’ have the allfiredest
bombardment you ever seed. Folks
way over the creek will think that
the bigest Fourth uv July this'
country ever seed has jest been
turned loose on this er commu
nity.’
‘Oh, Cousin Shuck,” said Miss
Liza—an’ ez I remarked jest now,
bless Her fat jaws— ‘please don’t
have no shootin’ tur it skeers me.’
‘Bles yo' soul aa’ body, Lizy,’
Shuck replied, ‘I wouldn’t skeer
you fur nothin’ in the world, but
on thig"ércasion I'm jest machully
bound to turn the hills an’ hollers
wrong side out’ard, er haw, haw—
plum wrong side out’ards, Uncle
Moses,” he added, grinnin’ at the
{lean old man.
‘Laws a massy,” eried Shuck’s
f wite, ‘the white sow is in the milon
patch. Run Shuck an’ knock her
fetch-taked head off.’
‘Shuck he drapped the package
uv powder in er cheer an’ er way
he went, an’ Liza snatched up the
powder, retched up an’ put it on a
limb uv the tgee an’ begged us not
to tell Shuck whar it wuz which
we all promised that we wouldn't.
Shuck brought er big milon back
with him an’ we div intoit red.
eved. Then he axed fur his pow
der We all ‘lowed that we hadn’t
seed it. |
' ‘That'll never do in the world,”
says he. ‘Er fourth uv July cily
bration without powder is like er
set uv plow gear without er back.
‘band—jest vachully wen’t go. Un
cle Mose, yo’ know whar's the
powder ¥
‘Ain’t seed it Shuck. Beleve
you tuck it with you when you went
airter the white sow.’
‘That's gest erbout whut I did,’
says Shuck, an' he put out to took
furit,an” when he couldn’t find it,he
went up in the fence corner an’
cussed that ole’ sow fur ever'thing
he could think uv an’ Liza-—bless
—but never mind, laughed fit to
kill her sweet self. Then Shuck
totch out bis jug. It made the gals
grin might'ly when they tuck er
pull at it jest to le sociable, you
know, but I tell you it made ole
Uacle Mose’s mouth pop like er |
hickory bark whip. . '
‘My %tairs erlive’ said one uv the
Jimison gals, ‘the black gnats
is so bad er body caint hardly
live,
‘That’s er fack,” said Liza, ‘an’
they jest run me nearly dis
tracted.’ |
‘l'll fix 'em,” Shuck lowed, an’ i
he weat into the house, an’ soon
come out with some fire in er big
dinner pot. He sot it on the groun’ |
an’ the ladies all thanked him tur
his kine an’ plite er tention. |
‘Shuck,’ says Uncle Mose—the o'e
teller is powertul frolicky— ‘they
tell me that you learnt er new step
when you went over to the Bran,
dance the other day. Give it
to us.
‘Oh, yes, do, Cousin Shuck," said
Liza -that's all right. Give it to
us, fur I know we'll be s 0 much
edified." That word settled it with
me right thar an' ef T coulder got
bholt-uv her hand I would have sar
tinly squz it, ‘
‘I ain't round thrown' my steps
er way," says Shuck, ‘but ez we've
all. met here to cilybrate the Fourth
here's at you. Here Zeb,' turnin'
to me, ‘pat for me." I commenced
to pat an' he hopped up an' went
at it.
It wuz er sort uv Ingun dance,
with er lot uv whoops agattered
tkrough it, an' the fust whoop
Shuck fotch he leaped up an'
struck the limb whar Liza had hid
the powder an' down come the
powder an' I wish I may die dead
ef it didn't come slap dab into the
pot uv fire. Thar wuz er bout er
second befo' any thing happencd
an' then the cilybration took place
tho nuff. The fust thing sperienc
ed wuz the earth sorter shakin' it=
gelf, an' then thar come er noise
that I ain't goin' ter turgit right
away.
Somebow I wuz permitted to see
the performance without takin’
much uv er hand in it. Shuck an'
Uncle Mose peered to go into part
nership fur they went up in the
tree together, an’ it did segm like
Uncle Mose's legs wrapped erroun'
Shuck er bout three times, Shuck's
wife rize like er turkey-hen auv’
went over the fence, an' Uncle
Mose's wite, ez good-hearted er ole
soui ez ever lived, wuz jest rolled
er way like er bar'l, The pore ole
lady squaled but kep' on er rollin.'
The Jimison girls fluttered ever'
whicher way, an' put me in mine
uv er lot uv young patridges. But
Liza - alaw, bless her fat jaws, the
powder, findin' that she wuz so
heavy it couldn't pick her up,
turned her round er time er two,
fluttered her over the fence an'
started her off down the lane on er
trot, an' she hadn't mo'rn got star.
ted goor: till er watermilon cotch
up with her an' I hope I may die
dead ef I didn't jest nachully think
it bad knocked all the mazin grace
outen the dear creetur. Holler! I
never hearn er pore soul holler
like she did. I run airter her an'
didn't ketch her till she got to the
foot uv the hill. She flung her
lovin' arms round me an' sobinly
eried : ‘Ah Lawd, Zeb, who
woulder thought that dinver pot
- woulder busted? When we all got
ter gether ergin, Shuck, seein® that
nobody wuz killed, lowed that the
safest thing would be ter get down
an' pray, an' we gest nachully got
down even though we seed the
white sow make er nuther run fur
the milon patch. I ain't axed him
but I jest nachully think that
Shuck has gone outen the celebra
tin’ business,”
