We do not believesthere-are any
secret methods of *keeping eggs su
perior to those published in the
Farm Journal from time to time,
For the bencfit of new subscribers,
we repeat some of them:
1. Pack in salt, small end down,
so that the ezegs will not dissolve
ecch other.
2. Place in a pickle made by dis.
solving a teaspoonful ot ealicylic
acid in a gallon of voiling water.
Usz2 a stone or wooden vessel and
renew the liquor every three
months,
3. Blake two pounds of lime in
hot water, add one pint of salt and
water enough to make four gallons.
Put the liquor into a stone jar and
fresh ezgs daily until nearly full.
Put a clean cloth over the eggs
and poue on’ this some of the set—
things from the vessel in which the
lime wasslaked. Always keep the
pickle above the eggs. By using
tihe same proportions, sufficient
pickle may be made to keep any
quantity of eggs.
4. The *‘Heaven Method” and
“Geraan Process,” which we pre
sume are ‘‘one and the same,” is
thiz - Water twenty-four gallons,
lime twelve pounds, salt four
pounds. Put twenty galions of
clear pickle in a whiskey barrel,
Pubverize and dissolve in a gallon
of boiling water five ounces esch
of bakiug soda, cream tarter, salty
petre and borax, and ounce alum.
Add to the pickle. Cover witha
cloth and settlings as in No. 3,
This will cover 150 dozen.
5. Take flowers of sulphur and
enough lamp-black to hide the cols
or, put in iron vessel and set in
one corner of an air<ticht hox and
place a basket of eges in the same
hox. Set the compound on fire,
cover box tight and leave it so tor
twelve bours. Those who like sul
phiured {ruit should try this meth
od.
In all cases use strietly fresh
egos, and be sure none of the shells
are cracked.
It is said, though we doubt it,
that unimpregnated eggs will keep
indefinitely witheut any preserv
ing process being used.—[Farm

Tmmense Sums For Fetilizers.
Savannah News. '
The Carnesville (Ga,) Rogister'
estimates that 2,000 tons of fertili
zers have been purchased every
year in Franklin county, in the
State, for the past fifteen years,
and that the average price paid was
£4O per ton. If only 1,000 tons
a year were purchased the outlay
was §40,000 per anum, or £600,-
000 in the fifteen years. It inter
est at the rate of 8 per cent is add
ed will be ceen that the farmers of
of Franklin county have paid out
£950,000 in the time mentioned
for fertilizers. No doubt the in-l
vestment was a good one, and thz\t!
the increased yield of the land fully !
justified it, but the question which
presents itsclf is thiss Could not
the farmers have saved at least half
of the £050,000 by paying more
attention tothe makingof fertilizers
at home, and have obtained just asl
good, if not hetter, results from
their lands? Nowadays tannel‘sl
gpend all they make for tertilizers
and even go in debt for them, Tue
prosperous farmers of the Middle
States do not spend a great deal of
money for fertilizers and yet their
% farms are very productive. They
are very caretul, however, to cols
Jlect and save all the material on
their farms that can be made to
; answer the purpose of a {fertilizer.
. They produce hay and grait and‘
'raise stock and poultry, and the
E result is that their hog pens, poul~|
! try yards, and barn yards yield als
‘ most enough fertilizing matier to
' keep their farme in a first class con
“dition. The manure they secure
| in this way, together with a little
lime, produces amazing results. If
| Georgia farmers are wise, they
| will look a little closer after the
home made manures. They will
: even go into the forests and collect
| the pine straw, which, when rotten
- makes an excellent fertilizer.
