President ot the Clemency Associ= |
ation, which has charge of the peti- ‘
tions to Gov. Oglesby in behalt of |
the wopdemned Anarchists, said I
yesterday that the work of the as-.i
sociation was progressing rapidly., |
Oumide of Chicazn there is a great i
demend for petition blanke, and|
thourande of copics have been sent i
to many &tics and towns in Towa,
Colorsdo, Califoruia, Missouri,
Ohio, Penusylvania, New York
¢ad other States. New York alone
will furnish some 50,000 signatures
t» the petition, while in Boston a
great many signatures of promi
nent citizene have been obtained.
In Chicago the number of signa
tures is large. Most of the mems
bers of the various labor organiza, ’
tians have signed the petition.—
The defonse fund of the Anarcbiste,
has been censiderably increased
siuce the announcement of the Su
preme Court. A subscription in
savor of the Anarchists has been
startal in Eogland. Gustav Belz |
says that during the last two weeks ’
the amount ot money subscribed to I
the defense fund by the German
Uaions of ¢ hieago is nearly $30,~
000. The large citics ot the Unit

wonth, The attorneys are rapidly |
closing up their work, preparatory |
to presenting the Anarchists case
to the United Btates Supreme
Court. Capt. Black received word

hands by Wednesday of next week. |

The Lining Theif. ‘
The lining theif is, I believe,
postively the latest exploiter in
the realm of crime. Thiz is the
nmin who trades hats with you in
the barber shop, in the sleeper car,
and outside the hotel dining room.
The mere act ot exchange is a
trick old enough in itself, but with
the oldest adroitness of the lining
thief it hecomes a very tantalizing
sort of meanness, The lining theif
carries about him onc or more lins
inge which he has pulled out ofold
aud rusty hats, and by a clever
juggle slips them, as occasion ofs
fers, into the property of others,
who have no means ot identity so
sure a 8 the look of inside, In this
way, though you may seem to
think yow know your hat by its
general appearance or color, yon
ar2 nonplused by the changed char
acter of the lining, I hear of the
recont detection of thir sort of
thievery en & sleeping car hy a
passenger who saw the legerdc
main eonnected with it through a
clamsy performance.—]Syracuse
(N. Y.) Btandard.
To Make Deep Milkers,
The timo when chws are made and
spoiled is when heifers are approach

and for six months thereafter, A
heifer should be well fed neutritious

strong meal, corn, oats, cotton seed

should have duily exercise, and
when she comes to the stall should
be handled, the udder kneaded,

their whole length. She will like
thiz, and it produces a pleasant ex~
citement about the parts, a tenden
cy of blood to the milk glands,
their growth, and an increased ten
dency t) give milk. After calv

the constituents of the milk are

be kept up and she should be milk

‘Hete is a neat style of coffin.’

articles to a Mail and Express re~
porter yesterday afternoon. ‘lt is
the latest thinz out, and is really
quite popular.
The coffin did not seem to he
different from the ordivary kind of
casket. It was plain in style and
finished in rosewcod, beautifully
marked. The handles were of solx
id silver, and the inside was hand.
somely covered with cushioned
trimmings of white silk, neatly
quilted. I¢ was evidently a coffin
that any modest man of simple
tastes could offer no objection to
being buried in.
‘What do you think of it ?

The reporter arched his back,

his strength into a great lift The

of painted air, so light was it, and
the experimenter narrowly escap

‘How did you happen to invent

¢ didn't invent it, but almost any '
one ought to have done so. Paper
has been used for car wheels for
years past. Doors are now made

‘A= soon as the recruits, attract

set forth on the poster outside, come
in to us,’ the officer said, ‘they are
examined by our physician who
test their constitutions in every
possible manner. In case they pass
this ordeal, which is very severe.
they are examined as to their men
tal qualifications, to ascertain
whether they are able to read and
write, as requived. Those who
come through this are then allowed
to enlist for five years' service in
the corps.’
Do any of the men re-enlist af
ter serving the full period ' asked
the reporter,
‘Oh, yes’ was the reply. ‘I
should say that a majority of them
do so. You must not understand
that all who enlist serve five years,
for a large number of them desert
after a few months. They are a
poor lot, those fellows, and only
come into the service asa sort of
make shift, when they have nothing
else to do. We do not care muck
when they desert, for we always
