At a recent meeting of the Former’s
Club, the following contrast was read ;
the first lines having been written b)
Dr. Franklin :
H7O.
“Fanners at the plow,
"Wife milking cow,
Daughtsr spinning yarn,
Son threshing in the barn,
All happy to a charm ’*

Farmer gone to see a show,
Daughter at the pieao,
Madame gaily dressed in satin,
All the boys learning Latin,
With a mortgage on the farm.
rotloii stixl Resumption.
The cotton crop of last year, (.ays the
Now York Express,) will yield from
2,500,000 to 2,700,000, bales, which, at
the prices received, will exceed the in
come from the 5,000,000 bales produced
before the war. Cotton, at 24 and 25
cents a pound in 18G9, is a good deal
more King than cotton at 10 cents a
pound before the war, and especially in
1868 the South produces in food about
all that the Southern people consumed.
American cotton also, now, as before
the war, as a whole, is the best cotton
produced in the world. Its demand is
unaba ed wherever cotton is manufac
tured, and will be. just as long as it is
produced. Tho iucorrfe from it is as
certain as the demand. On a belt of 600
miles of land there are no such cotton
lands in the world. All that is wanted
is capital and labor, and it is a disgrace
to the country, aDd especially to its
mock philanthropy, that twice as much
cotton was produced in a state of slave
ry as in a state of freedom, though this,
we are sorry to my, is but a repetition
t.f the practical freedom established in
Jamaica and St. Domingo, whero the
cotton and sugar jlantations went to
ruinju«t as fast as too negroes obtained
th ir freed, m.
But we expect different results at the
South, and they would be at once appa
rent if the Southern people were left to
regulate the : r owu business, labor and
political relations, us the people of tho
North and West aro permitted to regu
late theirs, and this with a much better
condition of the moral, religious and
educational statuß es the negro than we
shall over behold through Northern in
terference. Nobody, of course, ever
expects to see slavery re-established in
the United States, and row {hat the in
stitution is clean gone, nobody ever do
tires it- but Congressional reconstruc
tion iu the form of military government
at the South, the regulation cf suffrage,
the interference with State and personal
rights and laws, the exclusion of white
men from i ffiee and tho ballot, is a pos
itive bar to real freedom, independence
and prosperity, ar.d whenever Congress
♦onseDts to loosen its oppressive hold
upon the South, and to leave people
there as free as they aro here, not
only the South, but the whole people
will feel the healthy influence of
such freedom. If Congress will but
consent to let all the (States regulate
their own internal itfairs, so far as they
do net interfere with the United States
Constitution, the best results will ensue,
aDd we now predict, if this is done, by
the time two additional crops of cotton
arc put the market, tbo Govern
ment will be able, with even decent
economy in the administration of pub
lio affairs, to resume specie payment.
Little Tilings in Funning.
The whole success of a farmer bing
es upon timely attention tobttie things.
Thie mainly makes the difference be
tween thrift and poverty. The philos
ophy of success is expressed in the old
adage : “For want of a nail a shoe was
lost; for want of a horse a man was
lost.” It is a little thing to keep ac
counts oi the pecuniary transactions od
the Juror A halt hour Saturday even
ing would enable farmers to know just
bow they stand with the world. Yet
wc suspect half the men who cultivate
the-soilYenrer make an entry in a book
—and for want of this, accounts run
up fearfully at the store, and many ar
ticles of luxury are purchased, for
which they are unable to pay at the
closcxf the y ear. Debts accumulate,
thsdiju! Is mortgaged, and finally lost
fur want of a little paper and ink. It
is a little thing to put a tool in its
place, when not in use, yet many have
noAool bouse, or p’ace of shelter for
anyi implements or vehicle. Things
are 4 left where they were last used, the
plow in the field, the cart in the yard,
the chains in the stable, tho harness in
the wood house, the axe at the wood
pile, and the rake at the corn crib,—
Many do not even house the expensive
implements they have bought; and the
threshers and reapers aro treated like
cld plows and harrows. The parts
*“ h>;of steel and iron grow rusty, and
tno vMod decays.
A machine that is good for thirty
T ’* "7th proper care, is used up in
five 4ry abuse. It is a very little thing
t<> turn a nut that is loose, yet for want
of ttie tightening the nut is lo.t, the
belt comes out, and the loaded wagon
break# down on tho-tfay to market,
and a whole day for a man and team
is lost. It is a little thing to keep a
horse properly groomed, yet for want
oi clean letlocks, the skin cracks and
the horsa is lame, and the owner loses
the use cf him for weeks or months.—
(Ventilutiou is a small affair, yet for the
want of it, the stock In the stables suf
fers severely and disease sets in. It
is a sm-.1l affair to provide good seed
at the beginning ol the year, but the
whole success of the season depends
on it. It is an easy thing to deal fair
ly with your neighbors, and make a
name that is bettor than precious oint
ment. Many cheat on sinnil occasions,
do not get what they sell, and get a
reoutution for meanness that stands in
the wuy of their succour.

a take pleasure in (ifering t his justly celebrated first class flat top Cooking Stove to the publio, and would cad atten
tion to its many attractive and va'uable improvements
Over one thousand of the BARLEY' SHEAFS were sold last season, ar.d every Stove has given such uniters*! satis
faction in cooking, fuel saving, and convenience of operation, that, it is now difficult to supply the demand.
It has a patent anti dust shaking Sifter in tho hearth, which sifts the ashes int t a drawer in the ash pit, an I retains thw
cinders and ecal, which can be put back on the fire through the feeder, making no dust. •
The long cross piece is reversible, so that the wash boiler can he used on the side as well as tbe front hole*. By re
moving tbe long cross-piece we give a large opening for a cauldron or wash feet'le.
A feeder with slide for regulating the draft and feeding end fixing the fire when the front holes are in use.
Sliding front fire doors, g : ving full use of the hearth. There is also an additional si.do in the oven, being a very great
convenience while cooking and baking.
The oven is nearly as wide at the top as at the hearth line, which not on'y increases tho size, but will be recognized as
a great advantage iu baking.
As to the size of tbe flues and fire box, which are made to correspond with the very large oven, several months trial
has enabled the Manufacturers to so adjust that the greatest amount ol heat is obtained with the least possible fuel.
The design of the Stove has he n prepared with great care, and cannot fail to please.
I get these Stovos direct fr m ihe Manufacturers, ar.d amselling them at a small profit. I include thirty pieces of fur
niture and fixtures with each Stove, and will guarantee satisfaction.

Mr. George Dugdale— Dear Sir: Having been induced to try seme Fertcrlizers, and being entirely ignorant of which
were the best, I concluded to use three kinds; so I got ne ton of Peruvian Guano, one ton of Swan Island Guano, and
one ton of Baugh’s Raw Bone Phosphate. I gave them all a fair trial on cotton, some of the land upon which they were
u-cd having been iD cultivation nearly thirty years. I put them side by side, and am satisfied that Baugh’s Haw Bone
Phosphate was the best.
On land that would ti it have made 300 lbs. per acre, I gatberd 700 lbs, cotton; therefore I feel no hesitancy in rec—
emending the Phospnate 83 the cheapest and best Ferterlizer we cat get'
Very Respectful]. ELDER ALLISON DEfCLE.
I have noticed more favorable reports from this than any other Guano for several years past, and actualy beleive it to
be tue best and cheapest Pertilzer in use. Come, one and all, and put in your orders early. Sell your cotton at 25 to
30 cents, and make a large crop this year, and improve your lands at the same time.
