A Pleasant Day. — During the past
week, we spent a day with Cupt. Ev
ans on his plantation, or rather Kiuoh
afoonee creek, and had a Cud time catch
ing puckers. When first wc commenced
to fish, we thought the biggest sucker
about there had Lpld of tbrjfflbig end of
the pole, but soon a slight sfov'o of tho
cork gave evidenoe of there being an
other one in the creek ; by a gentle
twitch we had him, but he was too big
fur our tackle and after piaying arouod
for a time, he headed fur deep water,
and all the tffjrts made to cause him to
change his mind were of no avail, and
there he went wit h our hook and part
of the line fastened to his mouth. We
concluded be bad a head of his own,
and just let him go, but fixed up our
tackle and tried again with better sue
ceps. We brought quite a string of
large suckers home with up, and the de
cision of our household was, that we
should go fishing again.
Tho Cspt. has trade a good crop of
corn and cotton, and we saw hogs—
plenty to furnish him with bacon for
the next year. That looks a little like
old times.

running of sixty saws, of difletent sizes,
and for various purposes, and informed
us that he already had orders amount

£3T Wc are jJ i t to know that T r
rell County was uot represented iD tbo
bnyus Laborers’ Convention at M-icou,
and do not believe there is a freed man
in the county who would endorse the
proceedings thereof. Toe kindliest re
lations exist between the white and
black races in this section, and from all
the information we caajather, the lat
ter are perfectly sati.-fied with their con
tracts for the preseut year : and, not
withstanding the drought that has visit
ed us, cuttiog short all the crops in
which they were interested, still, of all
that has been made, they have received
theirportion according to contract. Imag
ine the good feelings of the laborer, and
confidence imposed in the employer,
wheD with the first toad of cotton
brought to market, all the hand* come
also—the cotton is unloaded, weight and,
the money for the same is paid to the
farmer, and, before leaving the Ware
house, a the funds is made,
and all parties interested go away satis
fied, with greenbacks” in their p ickets,
to spend with whom tied for what he
pleases. This has been done in Daw
son this season, and in more instances
than one, if we are to judge from the
amount of dress goods, new boots, hats,
&c., going out of town in the possession
of freedmen.

the large number of articles in every

Bth ot October, 1869, Mrs. J/ary Ellen, con

daughter of Mr. 11. S. and Mrs. 11. A. Parish.
The subject of this notice was born in Car

baptized in Flint River, in 1868 by the Rev.
Joiiu Underwood, and united herself with
the Baptist ehurch, ot which she continued a
consistent member giving daily evidence ot
Christian virtues and unfaltering faith in the
promiaes of her ble*sed Redeemer. We are
•■ained but not surprised when the aged aie
waTled fromtime to eternity; but,ohJ how
great the trial to see one in the bloSin of
youlti ami health, enjoying bright anticipa
tions of life and happiness, suddenly stricken
by disetse, chit led in death and consigned to
the cold ar.d lourly tomb. Thm was torn
from the family circle, a dutiful daughter,
tender sister, a loving wife, an affectionate
friend. 7/er sufferings though great were
made lighter by ihe unceasing attentions of
ber devoted husband, and the presence of
kind relatives and trieiuls, ever ready to min
ister to her wants. We are consoled with
the belief that she has joimd her dear moth
er, who only preceded tier by a few months,
and that mother and daughter are iu that
