A WorJ to I'lanlcro.
If there is soy interest that occopi'6
a pre-eminent position in our thoughts,
says the Southern llecoriter, it is the
planting interest of the South, and par
ticularly that of our own State. We
look upon it as the driving whosl of ev
ery other interest, and should it fail or
break, there would be, comparatively
speaking, a suspension of business. It
well b'oomes our planting friends to
turn their attentiou to to a nice calcu
lation as to loss and gain by simply re
solving themselves into cotton planters,
and the bending ot every energy to make
cotton at the expense of the absolute
neoessaries of plantation supplies.
The planter or farmer who thinks he
oan at all times, regardless of the sea
sons, make enough of octton extra, to
buy his meat, corn, hay, &i, will, nice
times out of\ter, tail. He will find that
the extra land put iu cotton for the pur.
pose of buyiDg bis supplies, will fat]
short of bis calculations, and that which
he thought would be his cotton money
clear, will go to buy tbat which he ough'
to have raised. If a planter could make
a bag to the acre j—have j st such sea
sons as be wanted ; bo sure all times of
bis labor, thero might be aa rxeme to
make a speciality of cotton, and with h e
cotton crop, bay everything needed from
an axe helve to a mule, Bat when wo
have from the beginning, the cry of too
wet a spring, or too cold a spring, thin
tbo worm, tLen the drought, then the
hot weather, &o , what folly to count on
a cotton crop as a surety to fill an empty
pocket-book. Especially, when the cot
ton factor has the farmer so tied up, that
be must me<t hit obligations at a cer
tain time, regardless of the price of cot
ton.
Wo would call tbat General a very
poor oue, who never studied the position
of his enemy, and prepared himself to
meet any fi tuk movement he mig it makt
upon him. It is all important to know
exactly your own lorees and how to
move them for an attack, but at the
same lime be prepared to meet an as
sault. So with tbo farmer, ho should
know exactly what his expenses shoulo
be, and go to work to moot them, but be
should have an eyu at the saute time fui
au attack of a cald spriug, worm, droogh
&.C., and should he Li» to meet such at
tacks with a good cotton crop, ho should
have a reserved force i.t the way of good
corn fields and fat porkers, st ,f he me
with a partial dtfeat, it need uot end in
a disastrous route, and all his labor lost
entirely.
But say maDy of our planting friend-,
wc cannot raise bogs as we did in good
old days of sl-very, “niggers will steal
them.” Os course they will if you le»
them roam one and two milts fiom home
to p ek up a living ia the woods ; in sac
the “niggers” ought to steal them so:
your iudtffercnoe. If there is pleuty
mast iu the wcods, enough to be of good
service to tho hogs in the way of fatten
iog them, send someone along to watch
them, for tbat which is worth rai-ing, is
worth protecting, for it is not mouey or
time thrown away to watch your hogs.
At night see to it they ate uuder look
and key just as your mules are, cr you;
corn crib, for there is just as much sense
in letting your hogs lie out at night, as
there would be iu throwing your ooru
crib doors wide open all night. It is
temptation that makes the thief, aud a
man has, morally, no right to tempt any
one.
All that io needed with our planting
friends is system ; but when everything
is bent to make cotton, all system is at
mn end, and the excuse for tho neglect
of the performance of those duties that
should be obligatory, is answered with
the argument, “haven’t time”—“must
be in cotton field.” Now is the time for
our planting friends to turn under the
weeds and all green vegetation, for it is
the very best of fertilisers and will be
worth hundreds, perhaps thousands of
dollars to the planter in the making of
hie next orop, yet it will all be thrown
away to pick out a few hundred pounds
of ootton. Lose a little eotton to save
euoh fertilizers, for you will be doubly
repaid next year, both in what you
make and in the increase value of your
land.
Btudy political economy as a sciooce,
and reduce it to practice; and when that
ie done, the door of success is wide open
to us. But this way of buying everything
and having *thing to sell except ootton,
is deliberate suicide of ourselves, financi
ally, when we have the means of raising
what we buy.

THE HENDERSON LAND SALE.
Postponement of Drawing to Dse. 28.
Corretpondenrt between the Proprietor and

Gentlemen; Irogrct that I am compelled toituk
nt'you- handa a postponement of tlie drawing of
prizes of the Henderson county, ky., I.and Sale
Although a great many ticksts have boon sold,
a sufficient number have not been dispoaed of to
justify me a sale of my prep erty without loss to
me, unless l hold the unsold tickets, wliick 1 do
not intend to do.
If you will give me until the 2«th dnv of De
cember, 18W, I feel confident of disposing of all
the tickets by that time.
lain, gentlemen, very respectfully,
„ , v 4 vvm. McClain,
Henderson, Ky., Aug. 24, 1309.
Reply of the CommiM*ionert %
Tho undersigned, c-mmißaioiiers to man
age the Henderson Lind Sale, regret to an
nounce to the public that a sufficient num
ber of tickets have rot been disposed of to
justify the proprietor in allowing a transfer
of the property on the Ist of September, aud
they have concluded to postpone the drawing
until the 28th day of December, 1869.
A large uuinber of tickets have been sold,
and we imtertain but little doubt that all wil,
be disposed of by the time fixed above. We
think we are acting in the interests of ticket
holders in seeking to have none others than
those who have purchased tickets, sharo in
the drawing. Should the drawing take place
now. the proprietor would be compelled, in
order to save himself from loss, to take his
chance in the drawing with the unsold tick
ets. This he docs-jiot desire to do, nor do
we desire that he should do it.
The postponement is fer a short time only,
and as the prosecution of the farms cannot
be sui reeded—being rented out for the pres
ent year, nor the rent collected until the Ist
of January next., it can make bu*\ little dif
ference with those who a**e so fortunate as to
win whether they succeed on the Ist of Sep
tember or the 28th day of December, 1869.
The owner of the property will hold no
tickets, and wo trust that those who have
j t-hem will wait cheerfully for the time fixed
jby us—for there will positively be no further
postponement.
The moncynttplng from the fate oftickefs is
in the bank, to our credit, and the owner of
the properly cannot in any wav use or con
trol it uutil afier the drawing and the trans
fer of property. The increasing interest in
the scheme, and the contidev.ee manifested
throughout the country in its fairness, justi
tv us in the opinion that the scheme will be
certainly a great success.

An opportunity is now offered for those

endorsed by Gov. iStcvenson, and Us S. Sena

There are 611 prizes in all; capital prize $l5O
