Thera ia an awful sublimity in the bare existence of onr intellect, whose exerciaea know no pauso. The wind that romps across the hemisphere, at laat gets weary and slumbers. The vi talised mass of bone rad sinew that surges along through the streets, after a few hours, drops into infantile repose. The Ooean, at times, shows symptoms of getting tired of treading its solitary march from zone to tone, and lies, for a taason, in the vast embrace of some supreme indolence. The very stars that have been racing tbeir circuits for mil lions of ag.'t, may at some time grow faint and atop on their aerial journey; bnt on the mother’s lap there’s a tiny object—a mere lump of helplessness - in which the Father of Immortality has awakened a hit of mind that will nev er stop tbiokiog We can stop running horses; stop moving armies; and with plenty of time to ooribtruct the forces we might check the powers of Niagara: but but we could safely defy all sub-divine ability to stop tbe thinking of that little soul. There is a stubbornness about the human mind that will brook oo pro hibition. The moro we try to stop thinking, the more gloriously do wefai; tbe very resolution to check the faculty, only arouses its energy. The thought is as a river, it will fl>w, and the only arbitrament we have over it is to decide which way it shall move; even t-heu we cannot wield a constant control over its mazy wandering?. A great deal of our thinking is done in an easy, careless, straying mood; without any particular rcsolu'ion to think. Borne of the best thoughts of a lifetime break upon us in a modest, unexpected manner. Sit down to your desk and resolve that you will think out something great, and if you even succeed iD thinking out gome thing that is little you will do well.— Discourag-d and fretted at the defeat, you s'roll out in the woods or meadow, drinking in the sights and souuds in an indifferent way, when you notice a fall ing leaf, or a little ant empire, or some »uch tr fie; wbtn lo ! a tremendous train of thought starts into busy exer cise ; some mammoth idea glides through the brain; and what you bad taxed your brain to perform oas been achieved by simply letting the brain alone. The brain is often like a school boy. the more it is scourged (be more it won’t work.— Mauy of our supreme fueling* and ideas come in that gotd natured way, sound ing no trumpet to herald their advent Suppose we could read all the stray thoughts of our past life ; we would find that the best reaul sos our studies had leaked out through them. F owers do Dot emit the'r best odors only when we smell of them; they drop he richest burdens of fragranoe when we are sleeping; and so many of out brightest thougli’s break out from th" miid at times (then we fail to notice 1 e n. It is a i ity that we lose so many of th< se straggling drop-; of golden treas ure; tboretme it would b- wise to furnish ourselves with paper and pencil, that at any time we might seize these transient glc ms and make them our permanent property. — Clai/ton Herald. Rich for a Ylomeut. Tbe British ship Britania was wrecked off the coast of Brazil, and had on board a large consignment of Spanish dollars. In the hope ot saving some 4f them, a number of u rrels were brought on d.’ck, but tbe vesst 1 went to pieces-ofist that, the only hope for life was in taking at once to the boats. Tbe last boat was about to push off, when a young mid shipman went back to see if any one was stjjl on board. To his surprise there was a man on deck with a hatcbel in bis h ind, with which he had broken open several of tbe casks, the contents of which he was now beapieg up about him. ‘What are you doing there ?’ shouted •heyou h. ‘liou’t you know the ship is fast going to pieces V ‘The ship may go,’ said the man ; ‘I have lived a poor wretch all my life, aud 1 am determ ued io die rich.’ llis remoustrancos were answered oo ly bv auother flourish of the hatchet aud he was left to fate. We should o.mut suoh a person a mad mso, but he has too many imitators. Men seem determined to die rieb, at all hazards. Least of all ri.-ks do they count the chance of losing tbe soul in the struggle, at any moment at all.— Aod yet the only riches we can hug to our bosom with joy, in our dyioj; hour, are tbe Ticbes of grace through Jesus Christ, which we must make ours before the dark hour comes. Oh ! how rich have many died in tbeir garrets and huts, while kings and princes have en tered on the other life »oro destitute tbao beggars. Who would not rather oboose to be rich for eternity, ihan rich for the fleeting momeot in which the ship is sinking into the dark waters ?■— Ex. It vii a judioious resolution of a well as a most pleasing oomplimeut to his wife, when, on being asked by a friend what he intended to do with bis girls, he replied : “I intend to apprentice them to their mother, that they may learn the art of improving time, and be Sited to become wives, mothers, heads of families, and useful members of society.” Equally just, but bitterly painful, was the re mark of the unhappy husband of a vain, thoughiless, dressy slattern : “It is hard to say it, but if my girls are to have a chance of growing up good for anything, they must be sent out of the way of tbeir mother’s example.” When is a blow from a lady welcome? YP hen she strikes yon agreeably. Tbe public singer that ‘draws’ best is the mosquito. VOL. IV. —NO. 42. [From the J/emploa Appeal. Tbe readers of newspapers are aware that Grant has been the recipient of mauy presents, but tho gnat majority of them have, perhaps, no definite idea of he money va'uo of these presents. Our honest belief is tha% somehow or other, Gen. The mys' tenes of all this we do not sffect to guess at; tbe knowa presents are what we mean to mention just now, amount ing, as above stated; to over SIOO,OOO.
