Leo. H° has got a poor man’s cigar,
the kind we smoke, that aro so cheap
it is almost liko liiuling them in tho

Members of Banner Lodge No. 28,
I 0. G. TANARUS., aro urgently requested to
attend next meeting, as matters of vi
tal interest will bo considered. By or
der ol the Lodge. J. W. Weston, W. S.
Parties interested would do well to
read Ur. Cheatham’s card in our col

tor Mils might be made much smaller
l, y 30US ulting tho Doctor at his office.
Bavin' T at least tho mileage and visits.
The moeting at the Methodist church
is still in progress and although con
tinued rains have prevented an undis
turbod sorios, still tho interest therein
increases, and tho prospect for a fruit
ful revival is flattering.
AVe refer tho reader to tho advortiso

general job work.

—AVo noticed the other day a quanti
ty of Bacon and Flour being shipped
by one of our morcbautile firms, por
order, to Cuthbert. Our wholesale
trade is somewhat dull at present, but
will brighten up as thesoason advances.
Much complaint is being made, and
justly, wo think, on account of the re
moval of the bridge across tho Chick
asawhatchio within tho incorporate
limits of town. A ford is not suffici
ent, and the removal of tho bridge
will deter tho trade from coming to
this place. We hope tho Council will
reconsider their action.
Seo advertisement of the “AVhecler

testify, truthfully to tho merits of tho

as his opinion that the Homo Shuttle
is the best machine for tho price ever
offered the public.
Cam*enters AVantu). —Col. W. A.
Huff, Mayor of tlio city of Macon,
wants 15 or 20 good carpenters to
work on tho Central City Fair
Grounds.
For tnen who aro not afraid or
ashamed to work he will pay good
wages. Address him at Macon.
The Fair Grounds.— About fifteen
hands aro at work, under tho supervis
ion of tho Building Committee, grading
and otherwiso preparing the Fair
Grounds. Tho word is “forward,” and
tho nearer tho tirno tlio greater tlio
interest that is being taken. Every
•laj* that passes adds strength to tho
undertaking, and tho magnitude of
this, our first Fair, will no doubt as
tonish many.
Wo call tlie attention of farmers to
the advertisement of tho Wilson Cot
ton Press, a d.agram of which can bo
seen at this office. Judge Samuoj
Williams and several other prominent
planters of tho county have seen tho
model, and given it as their opinion
that it was tho clicapiest and best Press
they had ever seen. One of theso
Presses will bo ready for exhibition in
short while, at Dawson. Parties wish
lng to put up a press would do well to
confer with tlio agents.
Messrs. Johnathan Collins & Bon,

a gaiu present themselves as candidates
j° r a Bharo of the public patronage. —
M this firm were strangers in this
part of the raerchantile world we
would endeavor to give them a formal
introduction, but having enjoyed tho
patronage of this country so long, and
fiever betrayed the pmblie confidence,
his only necessary to state that they
still wish to bo remembered by their
customers.
Attention Farmers. — On Tuesday,

Andrew Female College.— ln tlio
advertisement of this popular institu
tion on last week a few papers were
Sont out with an error as to tlio
price per annum in the Collegiate De
partment. It should have boon SOO,OO
instead of SBO.OO. AA’o tako pleasure
in not only making tho correction, but
also in calling tho attention of pa
rents and guardians to tlio fact that in
this section they need go no farther
. than Andrew Female College to liavo
their daughters oducated in all tho ac
complishments and virtues calculated
to fit them for every relationship in so
ciety. Rev. J. B. McGohee, the wor
thy President, needs no introduction
from us; ho has perfected all his ar
rangements, and announces the follow
ing well known educators who will
assist and co-operato with him in ma
king this institution worthy of tho
public patronage:
Literary Dep arfment- J. B. McGe
beo, M. A. McNulty, A. 11. Flewelleu.
Miss Price and Miss Moore.
Musical Department—Mrs Eussell
and Airs. Dejarnette.
CalistlienieDepartment—Miss Cone)
Ornamental Department- Mrs. It*
B. Lester and Miss Elia A. Lester.
Matrons—Mrs. J. B. McGehee and
Mrs. A. n. Flewelleu.
Stewardess—Mrs. Tyson.
Turning The Scales.— An aged
froedman in our community having
saved enough of his earnings to send
his boy to school until ho could spell
words of three syllables, concluded
that he, the father, was not too old to
go to school, and consequently, made
a teacher of his boy, the father being
tho only pupil. Having advanced
from A to AB, he was then given a
lesson in cat, rat, dog, &c. Tho father
unaware of the lino of discipliuo his
son intended to pursue was rather
careless about perfect lessons, and to
his surprise, on reciting a lesson after
■upper, being asked to spell dog, ho
responded d-o-r-g ! the son feathered
in on him with a well seasoned hicko
ry. On being interrogated as to that
manner of proceeding the hoy replied,
“that’s the way our teacher does us
and if you go to school to me you may
expect to get flogged if you don’t have
perfect lessons. ’ This school was
closed without an examination or pub
lic demonstration of any kind, and
we liavo not heard whether or not
there will be a fall session.
Nlr. AVriglit Blaekshear, formerly of
AA' ebster, next of Terrell, and more re- ,
ceutly of Dougherty county, met a
man on the public highway, in Sump- j
ter county not long since who purpor- j
ted to be from Kansas Territory, so
the story goes, who gave the said
Blaekshear, although he bad never
seen him before, a power of Attorney
to sell a lot of land lying in this coun
ty and belonging to a Mr. Brown of
Talbot county. Messrs MeNiel and
Wj •nn, two honest hard-working men,
purchased this land from tho said Mr.
Blaekshear, and now mourn because
the rightful owner has set in his
claim, and their $400.00 paid for the
land is not. Justice On* has bound
over Mr B. in tlie sum of S2OOO for
bis appearance at the next term of tho
Court, at which time, if ho does not
escape from the Cuthbert jail or is
not pardoned by Air. Bullock, lio will
answer the complaint of Messrs Mc-
Niel and Wynn who charges him with
forging the deeds of this land.
Cot,. Fielder’s Address. —On Tues
day the Agricultural Societies of Tor
roll County, and citizens generally will
be favored with an address from Col.
Fielder which will be beneficial and
interesting to those who give him a
hearing. We have heard his notions
on Agriculture, and though he bo not
of them, he has given tho subject
much study, aud if wo bo allowed an
opinion wo unhesitatingly ask our
readers to come and boar Col. 1 iold
er’s views on farming; it will do you
good. Let all seo to it that we have a
good turn out.
To end all disputes about tho mat
ter the Telegraph and Messenger says:
We again repeat, by tho authority of
Mayor Huff, that all premiums awar
ded at tho coming State Fair in Octo
ber, will be paid in money, promptly
and on tho Fair Grounds. The May
or of Macon controls this matter, and
will make good what wo have stated.

*■ celebrated
FLORENCE SEWING MACHINE,
and am prepared, from n personal
knowledge of it, as well us by certifi
cates fro apt hi si; who have used them,
to testify to its superior excel!, nee.
'1 he following are the advantages
chimed for this Machine over a!) oth
er* :
It is the only kind of Macbihe that
makes four kinds of s’ltch, three of
which are made on rn other Machine
and tiro stronger and rnotc elastic than
any other.
It is the only Machine that can sew
in m >re than one direit.on, having a
rev. rsible feed.
It has an improved hemmer, ma
kiug any vtid h of hem, and oaeily
managed, own'd exclusively by the
Florence Company.
It will hen, anytLing and make
perf >ct cot nets
It him-, fells, cords, braids, fucks,
qui’ts, braids', gatheis, & c „ without
basting.
It makes a gather and sews it to a
land at one operation perf.c'.ly, (utt- '
equaled in this )
It is the only Machine having a self
adjusting shuttle tension—a gr at im
pt ovemont over all others, rendering
it easy to do good work on any fabric
It t.stens the end of a seem better
and quicker than a seamstress can.
I’he Florence Sewing Machine is
simple m construction, and requires so
little to change for onv kind of work,
that its operation can be easily under
vtood.
Every part is stiot'g and durable ;
its tuot ons are all positive, not depen
dent on tlio variable and uncertain ac
tion of springs, hence it is almost im
possible for ti Florence Maohiue to get
really out of older, or riot to sew if
threaded right.
Iho .Machines era warranted iu
every particular.
I in end every Florence Machine t
sell shall give ct,tiro satisfaction, eu<-
Ltinii g its reputation as being trie
must reliable flowing Machine in use.
All I ask is foryuu to try theMachiuo.
