it whs our good fortune to accompany

Arriving at the residence of Mr. Y.

the number. Finally, however, our
doubt was dissipated by a chance re

It is generally expected of news
paper men fo write a letter when they
go f -ff on a pleasure trip. We are not
p r epared to give a full account of our
visit ib Atlanta last week, for wo took
heer instead of notes; consequently,
our sigl,t-.oeing was dimmed.
On Monday night of last weok, in
company with our eDver young friend,
W, R Melton, we boards l ! the 11 r.
m , train, and after a long and dusty
ride, arr'ved at Macon in time for
breakfast. Wo went tip town to sea
some o’d Dawson friends, and had to
break-fast for the car shed or be left,
by tho Atlanta bound tiain.
From Maccn to Atlanta the cars
were crowded with rner, worn n and
child ren who were going to the latter
place to witmSS the great State fair
Now, it ip customary for gentlemeft to
give up seats to ladies, and of course
we would have done so on this occa
sion, bad it not been for our blind
companion. At every station the
i.umber increased until it was danger
ous fur others to attempt to ride on
the p'atform.
At 2:40 p. m., Tuesday, we arrived
in the “Gate Ci'y,” end were met by
our genial y.ung friend and fellow
townsman, James G. Darks, Esq.,
who escorted us to tho Kimball House,
where lie had arranged lor us a com
fortable room and board for the week.
After ridding ourself of nearly a peck
of dust, we went with our friend Mel
ton to his boarding house, where be
was kindly received by Mrs. Callaway,
the accomplished landlady of the
house, who will, doubtless, care for
him ns she whouldl fit brother. Feel
ing sat is Setl that Will was in good
hands, and having learned that the
chances for his eyesight to be rostnred
were favo, able, we left him, and re
turned to the Kimball House.
8.-ing lather curious to witness the
sights on exhibition at Oglethorpe
Dai k, we wont out with Col. Darks
! and studied through the vnioifs de
partments. Three hours thoroughly
satisfied Jin, and lie trade adui to the
festive scenes and left on Wednesday’s
train for home; not, liowt-ver, until af
ter lie had argued and gained two
cases in the Supreme court. Mr.
Dai ks is a splendid fellow to be with
on a trip like this, and we reluctantly
consented for him to leave us Alter
li“ left, we were lost in a multitude of
people, and the crowd continued to in
eiease until eveiy hotel anil piivate
boarding house was jammed to over
flowing.
Even “Sprawl*,” was lit erally pat
ronized on Wednesday night, when it
was impossible lor thepublic houses to
accommodate the immense crowds that
came in on every trait 1 . Thuisdoy
was the big day. We heuid prominent
citizens of Atlanta say that the crowd
present on Thuisday was the largest
that had ever assembled ur the city.-
We think ihere uiu-t have been 40,-’
000 visitota in Atlanta that day, which,

space than we can command. Upon
the whole, the fair at Atlanta was a
decided success" but 'n our humble
opinion, ii has been surpassed by for
mer State fir- in Macon.
On L’fiursday night, it was our good
pleasure to meet, at the Kt in nail
House, Mj. H- Atkinson, of this
place, who has been spending the
Summer among thd'mountains for his
health. In company wi'h ‘.his gentld
man, we went to Degive’s opera hall
to witness the periorman e of the
cecbrcftd Barlow, W i eon, Prim Son
anil West Mec.tstrel troupe, and from
the way the Major tangled and al
most yell and, we conclude that his con
dition is much improved. We also
had the pleasure of meeting the ac
complisl od Miss Jennie Llwards, ot
Smith villa who is visi ing friends in
the “Gate City.” Mr. T. K. Taylor,
of Terrell county, was also in atten
dance upon the fair, and we are pre
pared to say that lie had a large time
generally.
j Dr. George W. Farrar, of D iwson,
was there, too; and say3 he’ll be
dingod if Atlanta ain’t a right large
! sized vil’oge. Farrar was particular
ly intaiested iu tho rare.t. Uis no-
ted for liik business qualifications, and
a few trades made by him at Macon j
lias convinced us that as a tradist lie’s
a successist. While at Macon lie deci I
ded that be wanted a good suit of
clothes, and would purchase them if
he could do so on reasonable terms.
Alter stepping into a first-class Jew
store and making a critical examina
tion of a suit, lie called out, ‘ Say,
Mister, what’!! yon take for this coat,
pnn*s and vest ?”
The gent’emanly Jew,
finger on his nose, rushed in the
lion of Farrar, declaring that “Dose
goods vas de best vat never vas, 1 ut
ns I vns selling out pelow cost, I vonld
put dent down to you for forty-six
dollar ”
Farrar wheeled upon his heels and
said, “Humph ! you’re barking up the
wrong tree —I know whnt they ore
worth,”
“Veil, tell mo vat you’ll give for dose
suit of clothes,” a*ked the Jew.
“Twpntv dollars,” said Farrar.
“Vat! Twenty collar for dose suit!
Vy, mine friend, itose clothes cost me
more money don ,dot ”
Farrar couldn’t see it through doss
glasses, and again repeated his i f? r,
when the Jew aceepted. Then the
Doctor declined fo take them at Ids
own p’ijo. Then the Jew ccmmencd
to work on Farrar in good earnest. —
At first the clothes were priced at for
ty-six dollars; tlion twenty, and the
Jew'finely put the price down to six
teen dollars. Farrar scratched his
heart for some time and then said
“I’ll give you sixteen dollars for the
coat, pants, and these two over
crats”. As quick as lightning the Jew
cried.
“Dun! Dose goods vas your?, ’ and
