An Old Citizen Gone.
Dtzn, st Brown Station, Ga., on the 4th
"instant, in his 72nd rear, Judge J. J. Chap
ped a loved and an exemplar; citizen of this
county.
Judge Chappell was Dorn in Hancock
county, Ga., August 7th, 1*06; removed to
Taiggs county while young and mariied
M'ss Mary H. Lingo in 1826, where he resi
ded until 1843, when be removed to Sumter
county and settled near Boltsfotd. In 1869
he removed to Preston and run the hotel at
that place until 1874, when he removed to
Brown Station, where he teaided until his
sudden summun (as we have every spiiitual
evidence) to go hence, from this world ot
suffering lo enjoy eternal bliss The Judge
embraced religion early iL life and attached
himself to tba Baptist church, of which he
remained a consistent member (part of the
tim a deacon) until his death. He
joined t!,e order of Free Maor.“ while-in the
marediaD of lif*; filling several civil offices
of trust and honor with credit to bimailf
and satisfaction to the public. In short, his
life was a success, as is attested bv the large
family which he leaves to mourn their loss,
all of whom stand as ornaments to society,
and same adorn the church of which he was
so long a member. Mrs. Chappell, his faith
ful wife, who has fora month boen confined
to a sick bed, bore her bereavement with a
fortitude which cau only be boru by the
Christian who realizes the fact that “He can
not return, but she can go to him.”

cultural Fair.
We take pleasure in calling at
tention to the report of the differ
ent committees on the occasion of
the fair held in our city last Satur
day.
Notwithstanding the exceedingly
inclement weather during the night
previrus, and all day of the 4th in
stant, there was a large crowd pres
ent, of the citizens of our county,
both ladies and gentlemen,represent
ing every department of industry
throughout the county. There were, ]
also, in attendance upon the fair, j
many of the citizens of Dougherty.
Calhoun, Randolph, Webster, and I
some from more distant counties,
ami, but for the continued rain which j
fell in torrents form early dawn until j
the close of day, i here would have been (
one of the largest crowds ever con
vened in our county. Most of our
citizens and visitors from other coun
ties confessed much astonishment at j
the interest manifested under such ’
unfavorable circumstances. The
indomitable courage and energy
manifested on the occasion proves to
our mind, conclusively, that there is
life still in the farming interest of
the country, and it Only requites a
little continued effort on the part of
our citizens to reinstate S. W. Ga.
into the position she rightfully de
serves as being the most desirable
section, all things considered, not
only of Georgia, but the entire South.
We feel proud of the good old coun
ty,of Terrell because c>£ the states
she now occupies in her farming in
terest and industrial pursuits, coup
led with the energy and economy be
ing practiced by ter citizens. We
think all classes of our citizens have ,
cause for congratulation, and should
go forward, with fresh courage, to ]
build up the general interest of our i
county.
There has been, comparatively,
but little effort made by our citizens
to make our Spring Fair a success,
yet this effort, small as it may hav e
been, will result in great good to the
county. The fair, as before inti
mated, but for the rainy day, would
have been the grandest success ever
attained in the county. This seems
to be the opinion of all who witnessed
so large and varied a display, on the
fair grounds, under such unfavorable
circumstances. The display, especi
ally of farm products and vegetables,
was excellent for the season of the
year. The department of flowers was
beautiful to behold, which was not
near so large as it would have been
if the day had been fair. In fact,
every department was well represent
ed, and this only argues what would
have been, had the day been more
propitious. An officer of one ol
the neighboring agricultural associa
tions remarked to the President that
he was satisfied from what he had
seen on the occasion, that no county
in this section of the state could excel
Terrell in her agricultural products
and fine stock. Terrell can excel any
of her sister counties in way of good
farm stock, and we can safely assert
that we have more tine mules, and in
better condition, than any county in
this section of the state.
The outlook for our county is
more flattering than it has ever been
since the war; our peoplo are en
couraging and getting out of debt,
tanners are raising more of their sup
plies at tiome; merchants who have
been selling provisions at an enor
mous per cent, are getting uneasy,
and our people generally are more
inclined to live within their means.
With these omens for good, and a
spirit of public enterprise hv our citi
zens, we are bound to succeed. We
sav, then, to one and all, let us co-op
erate with the Terrell county Agri
cultural and Horticultural Society
and begin at once to prepare for a
fair in the fall of this year that will
outstrip all our sister counties.
