JOB PRINTING.
Having just received n new Job
and other material, we would j
notify the public that we nro fully pre
pared to execute nil kinds of job j
work—such as lubels, letter heads, I
hand bills, posters, programmes, cir- J
culars, etc., in the best style, at short
notice, and at MACON Fit ICES.
Chanok or Schedule —lt will be
seen by reference to the schedule of
the Southwestern Railroad, that it
has been altered and the time made
by the passenger trains considerably
increased in rapidity. The up train
from Egfttula now arrives at th : s place
at 9 45, A. M , and the down train
trem Macon at 2 35 P. M.
The election for Judge and Solicitor
of this (Pataula) Circuit, passed off;
quietly on Wednesday last, with the
following result fer the town precinct:'
Judge— Clark 106 ; Bower 41.
Solicitor —Parker 05 ; Stewart 52 ;
Barrott 19. _____
Soott’-s Monthly —The December:
number of this most excellent and truly
Southern magazine has reached us. Y\ e
aro truly g!ei to witness the encourage
ing prospect before it for another year. (
The publisher has gone to much expense
recently to *dd to its interest,- and we
have no doubt, from tbo character of,
the work, that he will be fully justified
nso doing. Price $) per year.
Alexander & White —Special at
tention is callod tt> tho advertisement,
of this clever firm of Macon. They are
men <of-enterprise, and well known as
fair dealer* in business. The large bus
aincss done by them enables them to j
sell at exceedingly low prices. m One of
- firm was fcimerly a resident of our
town —a relative of one of our most j
worthy follow-citizens, and familiarly j
known to many of our readers as “Willie
Waite.” If you want to trade with '
men Os the right stamp when you go]
to Macon, call on Alexander A White. |
Cold Weather— Last Sunday was
said by ths oldest inhabitants to be the
coldest day experienced in this section
in eleven or twelve years. There was
moro ice than we have seen in many a
day. The trees, and cverthing exrcsod,
were a cra-ing c,’ ice from a half to an
inch in thickness. The limbs of stout
pines wero literally weighed down and
brokcD off by their load of ice. We i
were reminded, on Sunday, of the
skirmishing of the war, by the constant
sudden popping and terrible crashing of
tho breaking and falling tranches.—
During Monday night the ice melted
and a slow, but s f ca ly and cold rain set
in, which lae cd throughout the day.
Frank Leslie s Ladies, Magazine.
The Jeouary number of this most pop
ular and very excellent serial is now up
on our tabic. Like its predecessors it
has the fashion plates f* r January got
up in the highest style of art and beau
ty of fiuish, accompanied with <tcso> ip
tiyj notices and illustrations of the
leading articles off niiulne ajipari 1
worn. Wb consider this department
of the Frank Leslie’s Magazine worth
four times the actual cost of the num
ber, not to speak of the cutting patterns
The iitcraay matter of the magaziie
is very choice; altogether this periodical
is one of the first of its class, printed
on good paper, iua bob! and legible tvp>,
and should find its way to the Lome of
.alt classes of society.
The Nkoro Exit. —Daring the past
few weeks—especially Christmas week,
a largo number of freedtnen have left
this section ; and stars are entertained
ia some quarters that there w ill be a
scarcity of labor ia this end some ad
joining counties the present year, Tbo
cause of so many leaving from this im
mediate vicinity wo attribute to the fact
that large numbers of them wero brought
here during the days of “rcfugcciog’’
Our advice to all is to discourage, if
possible, this indication on tho part of
the negro to chaugo his quarters —to go
up the country”—both for his own
and our good, Whilo we can illy afford
to Bparo any laborers it is decidedly to
the negroes’ disadvantage to go toJNortb
Georgia or Tennes os. as most of them
are doing, from the /act that it is, just
now muoh easier for a laborer to make
a living in this scotion than that. This
is a natural conclusion, from (he fact
that that section was devastated by au
army whilo this was not.
If thero it any thing in the “Crop
signs’ observed for scores of years by
old inhabitants, the present year prom
ises to be one of abundance. Thero
should bo many more acres cultivated
than there was last year. If this is
don*, wo need-the laborers. Let us
keep as many as possible in the coun
ty. And let it be remembered that
•he idaa of supptying the negroes’ place,
either as laborers in the cot'on or rice
field or in almost any other capacity, by
vkiiet from any quarter of the globo
whatevsr, is ao impracticable undertake
* n g, and an attempted colli-ion with
the decrees of nature-
