Wo do not ask tho indulgence of
rtir Tenders, savs the Journal ek Mcs
setitmt, for continually Introducing this
subject upon their notice, because we
consider it a most important on", and
wtv intend to do wl.at‘ wo can to pro
vent another such a year, among plan
tens, ns w e have just passed through.
In firt, we nro sorry that Congress has
repealed the Cotton Tax because we
thiiik that our people will he curbed
away with the idea of gold mines in
cotton bags, and continue its cultiva
tion to the ueglect of the necessities of
life. Some men are so infatua'ed with
money .that they will half s'arve to
have it; and as they know cotton will
sell, for money, when they can only
eat and feed their provisions, they
neglect everything to raiso codon. —
Our opinion if that if as much cotton
is made next yearns has been this, t lie j
price indept ndent cf the tax, w ill no'
be as it is now. Henceforth, wo reit
erate what wo have before said—plant
grain—raise y. ur ow n meat, (the nc
gr'cs won’t steal it all ) an I, when
you see that you have a sufficiency of
these very necessary articles plant cot
ton. Tho Southern Cultivator has the
fo’lowing very good suggestion on the |
subject
I Do not forg't that cotton is heavily\
taxed, and that the great need of the
* South at present, is an abundance of
provisions. W ith well supplied barns j
and granaries, commercial independ
ence, at least, is secured. The opera- j
tions of this month, enter largely in o
the food question The oat crop is to
be sown, and in this latitude, ts the
weather is favorable, and the ground
in good condition, the roubl eof the
month i» about the time to begin the
work. We would again urge our
friends to sow very lastly of th e vain
able grain. During the last year, it
has commanded a very fine p'ice —in
■omo cases apj toximaling that of corn
—the labor required by the crop i
eomptru'ively light; the yield is usu
a'ly large, w hen the quality of the oats
upon land wh ch it grows is consider ;
ed, and there is no better food i..r|
horses, cows ;.n<l .-lock of every k nd.
No' on'y sow a large bra adtli of land, j
but take pains and put too crop in
nfc.iy- Experience has pret'v gener
ally decided in favor of covering this
grain wi.h a turn plow. Take as
much pain a as you wou'd with a wheat
crop. Do not think because this is a
hardy, thrifty plar.t, which will do
tomething even < n a poor half plowed
field, that therefore it will not bear
good treatment Just think of 40, 00,
or 80 bushel* per a. re, as is the casein
Scotland, and even as fur South as
France. When not engaged with the
oat crop, make lull preparation for a
large corn crop.

Editors Southern Cultivator :—Only
b f.w years ago, we were told hy our
Northern neighbors, that we could
not rttLe winter apples in our climate;
but now wo have numerous varieties
unsurpassed for their long keeping
qualities. Our climute also ripens all
the Northern grapes, with a degree of
sweetness, and richness of flavor, tin
attainable there, and gives us besides
the unrivaled ftcuppe nong ; from
which, as a parem, we may expect a
numerous race of hardy and productive
grapes, sui ed alone to our soil and cli
mate
With these examples before ns, may
we not look forward villi confidence
to the time, when our < rehards and
gardens will conmin many varieties of
plums, cherries gooseberi ies, currants,
and other fruits, now almost unknown
among us, produ ed from our wild v«
rieties, by hybridization and high cul
ture. What w ild fields thus invite the
labors of the enterprising horticultur
ists of the South ! Each wild fruit a
separate field of labor, and room en

• In this article, I wish to direct at
tention to the imj rovement of our na. 1
tive plums, as the nearest and eas ; e-t 1
work, that our ‘ hands finds for us to
do. The finer varieties of foreign and
Northern origin never perfect or fruit,
because of the curculio, and the trees
themselves are soon destroyed by the
borer and our burning sun, but in
every corner the insipid Damson, and
the unhealthy Chicasaw are found The
plum like itp congener, the peach, is
easily hybridized, and “sports” fiom
the seed.
I once planted six seedings (com
moD red and veflow Chickasaw female,
wild plum male,) and each b re a dif
ferent frui* all showing their wild pa
rentage in shape, color an 1 flavor.—
One variety of great beauty and ex
cellence, I have preserved. Twova
rieties growing in this vicinity, call -

and similar parentage. Asa cliihs,
they may ie dcsciiliod ns hardy, vig
orous trees, attaining large s ze, very
few suokets, fruit with tho aroma of
wild plum, which probably protects
them from the curculio. With the
