SHEEP.
Editors Southzrn Cultivator :
I see inquiries made fir the “best
cross to improve the oommnn sheep”
of our country. I urn o’tad to see it.
Itw a good step in '.he right direction,
and I hope very many others wi 1 see
the importance of muking the same in
qairy, and make a strong effort to im
prove their flocks in every way possi
ble, for, es a general thing, they sad’y
need it, and v ill pay a larg-r profit
for good attention and improvement
than any other kind of stock They
Deed careful and daily watching, so
thai, if one be ailing, the shepherd will
know it at a glance, and give it proper
attention. They need a good house,
or shelter, weather boarded on the
north, east and wst sides, in which
they should be boused every night,
and on very rainy days, from the first
of December to the first of May, for
the purpose ot securing comfort to the
tfceep, increasing the quantity of ma
ture, and guarding against dogs. This
bouse or shelter should, at all times,
be kept well littered with clean straw
or leaves, and have a good raci with
troughs underneath, in which to feed
them bay, pea vines, fodder, cotton
seed, pens, oats and turnips; this feed
ing, be it much or Jkt'e, should be
regular cs to time of duy, and quantity
of food, as is possible. Ttiis regulari
ty is very necessary. It makes them
come home at night, thus saving the
time spent in sending for and hunting
them up. It makes them gentle and
easy to manage, at all times—this is
especially convenient at lambing and
shearing time. In fact sheep ought
to be as gentle as dogs, so 'bat they
may be approached by the shepherd,
anywhere and at any time, and han
dled in any way he may desire, wheth
er to examine the grow th and condi
tion of their wool, or if in proper order
for the butcher. Then they will be
gentle enough for any purpose. Ihi ,
some will say, is carrying 'he matter a
little too fan, or, at least, unnecessarily
so. Ido not think so, ana insist upon
it “they can’t be made too gentle ” It
is very easy for a lever of sheep to
make them perfectly gende, and he
alone can appreciate its importance
My own »re quite gentle '1 hey wi:]
rear upon my waist for bites ol greeu
rye, &o. Yea: I can make them fol
low me into my dwelling —as my bet
terhalf will most unwillingly testily
And here let me warn those, who con
template teaching th'-ir flock this ac
complishment, first to induce the r
wives—if they are so blest—to keep
their old shoes, brooms and -mouthing
irons, in a remote part of the bouse,
and be sure not to lead them in that
direction They Deed, further, a l«>t ot
green rye or barley, to run on through
the winter and spring—especially the
suckling ewes and lambs. They need,
also, to be salted with great regularity.
They need, we repeat it. all the atten
tion we have mentioned above quite
as much as the cross of a thorough
bred buck, for, without proper at en
tion in eve.y other respect, very little
snay be expected frorr tne cross, unless
it be to make them hardier, thus ena
bling them to endure hardships and
privations to which they may be ex
posed, with some degree of impunity,
«r.betn the coarse bred and degenerate
native would sink lrom want <i suffi
cient vitali y and endurance.
The man who does not love to at-
tend to sheep, and who does not con
sider their attention & pleas'ml trouble,
and who does not look forward to
lambing time with the same pleasure
that a school boj does to his vuoation,
and to shearing time with very p eas
ant anticipations, and who oaunot feast
his epicurian taste on a browned and
juicy sirloin of South Down mutton,
does not possess in our opinion, all the
attributes of a successful sneep breed
er. But, any one who wishes to, can
acquire the necessary fondness for, and
knowledge of sneep rais ng, mut h eas
ier thaa he imagines, and will be eufih
ciently rewarded for his trouble, to
warrant him in increasing his flock to
the utmost capacity of bis means. Let
the tryo or old fogy, as the case may
be, just make big shelter and fix there
in bis racks, troughs, lit er, &o Let
bim supply himself with a sufficiency
of proper food for winter, together
•with the patch of rye for the suoklmg
ewes and iambs; then purchase a very
fine ram, of the breed he wishes, and
then go out and drive up—if he cm
possibly find them—his long deserted
flock, and then, if be wishes to know
how to manage them on the improved
humane and merciful p an, and can't
get M R. C., of Nashville, Tenn , ft.
Ji. G., of Ninety Six, S C , J B. J.,
■of Burke county, Ga., K. P, of Atlan
.ta, Ga., or J. W. W., of Cartersvi le,
Ga., to tell him how they manage their I
flocks, then, if he desires, 1 will tell
bim bow my email flock is managed,
wfaiob baa been such as to induce me
to increase them to as many as my
pastures will graze in summer, and
my turnips and hay ieed in winter.
Boriously, Messrs Editors, 1, for one,
.and 1 do not doubt, many others,
.would like very much io rear fion
