from their minds the subject of biilge
building, ditch cutting, city tax, Ac.,
and taken into consideration a method
by which they can detect all hog ar.d
cow thieves. It requires all parties of
fering meat of any kind in this market,
to furnish the cars of the slaughtered
animals to the Marshal, to be by him
preserved fur inspection. Really this is
not a bad idea, if cars do not accumu

Tbo San Antonio .Express of Mavl
21st gives the following particulars of
the lute disuslrous hail storm :
Our city hr a perfect wreck ; every
house ifi it has received some damage;
many arc in complete.ru-ine, with noth
ing but-fragments of w alls standing.—
The hu.l stones |>en«ir«ted the best
roofs, ffoiiig thr.itigli the roofs like can
non balls. All tho windows facing the
north have been smashed in ; even win
dow shutters and doors were 1 roken
down. Tiie appearance of the city
could not have been woise under n se
vere bombardment Trees are stripped
of their leaves and brandies, which lie
piled up in tho yardw and streets; the
sides of houses exposed to the hail
have the appearance of having with
stood a thotlsand discharges of grape
and cauistcr. The roofing of the en
tire city i* perforated like a sieve.
The hailstones were of irregular
shape and all sizes, as if a miss of ice
had broken al>ov« our devoted heads,
and driven by a tornado to the earth.
One hailstone was found weighing
over five pounds, white a great many
br large as a man’s list were picked
up.
Many of the families w hose houses
were beaten down took shelter under
beds and tables, and tints escaped bod
ily harm. We have only heard of one
death, a negro hoy; several had limbs
broken and severely bruised, while the
whole population wan frightened al
most to death.
The damage is of every charactrr,
and five hundred thousand dollars will
not cover it all; rods were universally
destroyed and w indows broken in;
household furniture was entirely de
| molished in some houses, and in many
stores the damage was great The
i Menger House was greatly damaged,
the Kleopper Hotel is almost a wreck,
the Cotivent buildings are terribly cut
up. All the blinds and wmdow glass
on the northern side were destroyed.
Freni h’s building suffered greatly’,
and, in fact, all building having win
dows to the north.
General Mason’s residence was un
roofed and his family exposed to the
inclement storm. But the most dis
tressing pictures yf all are tho habita
tions of the poor people, their houses
battered in, household goods destroyed
and their little gardens ruined.
The coru pat cites and gardens are
flattened tq the gi ontid. and have the
appearance of having passed through a
chopping mill AU tho the fruit crop
is destroyed.
1 on storm re enabled a terrific bat
tle, the lightning flashing in fearful viv
idness, the tiiunder crashing like a
thousand cannon, und the hail falling
like shot ; so fearful was the noisy that
no one cou and hear unless they st ream
el in each other’s ears. Never in the
history of this city, never in the memo
ry of tho oldest inhabitant, was jus’
such u storm experienced.
Y\ e learn that the hail storm coup
tnenced tight miles this side of New
Braunfels r ached only u short dis
tance below our city, and extended
from five to twenty miles in wid h—
destroying everything over a region
thirty miles fr an North to South and
tci) to twenty m les from Mast to West.
