Gody’s Ladie*’ Book—
Tbo August number of this excellent
book is again or. our table, and though
we have the pleasuro of seeiDg it every
month, it did not fail to attract our at
tention, and we know the beautiful
steel engravings, patterns and besides,
forty or fifty pages of excellent read
ing matter, which, we know, will not
fail to please everybody, therefore,
every man should subscribe for it.—
' Who would not spend the small sum
of $3 00 to please his better half. —
Also,
Peterson’s Magazine—
For the same month, the old and re
liable Magazine. We would not re
tract from its already known populari
ty by saying anything more than that
it is well that even Gody keeps bis cor
ners up, when he has such competitors
asdtf’eterson in the field. Subscription
$2.00 per annum.
Speaking of beautifui things, we
could not forget that exeellont literary
and appropriately named paper, the
Chimney Corner—
which comes under that head. The
Chimney Corner, Boys & Girls Week
ly. Illustrated News, and the numer
ous o'her works of Mr. Leslie, are con
stantly on hand.
New Pork World gives
the following beautiful portraiture of
the appearance and character of one of
the representative men of the South :
“Wade Hampton, the Murat of the
South; Rubens would have delighted !
to paint this man’s face. A strongly
marked face. The face ol a hero anti
leader of men Standing over s x feet,
the figure athletic and lull, the shoul
ders ample and wnrtey to carry a head
which gives promise of firm hut quiet
determination. In brief, 'he head of a
man who has best represented the
strength and inte lect of South Caroli
na in uh the tiring years of her check
ered history. The face is bronzed with
the dust and mii ke of many a lr.nl j
fight Such a lace a- might he deem
id the incarnation of war when on. e
aroused The eyes black and piercimr
t o chin si lid, ti e jaws of iron tu mid,
and aril mounted by w hiskers of the
English Guardsman fashitin. Tin’s
man’s history is a poem in i self. We
can ca 1 to mind one man like him in
the chronicle of the ALglo-Saxon.—
That was Jas. Grahame, Viscount
Dundee. Both wore ahreurs. Both
alike fought gallantly for a li ;e cause,
of blood and birth, and both 1 st '.ha
great stakes w hich (hey cast headlong
in the fight. South Carolinians will
tell you with pride of his history, of
1 is thirteen acres of rose gardens, of
his stable of magnificent blooded hors
es, the finest stable in all the sunny
land of the South, of his genius, his
pride of race, his heroism and self sac
rifice for the lost cause of the struggle
which he made, and ol his manly and
dignified silence w hen the South was
overthrown, horse, foot and artillery,
by the armed might of the North, and
ol his Wise counsel to Ins people since
then. Hampton has, 'ike most cf the
Southern delegates in the Convention,
hut little to say. He abides tho will
of the people of the North quietly, as
he said yesterday, and will be content
and satisfied with their choice. Mr.
Hampton wears grev pantaloons, a
dark frock coat, and is slightly inclined
to corpuleucs.”
