It is now pretty certain that the
United States Semite, alter the 4tl
of March next will be democratic. — j
This being the ease, the radicals will!
make strenuous efforts to secure a
majority of the House in the coming
congressional elections. It has been
intimated for some time that a part
•of their programme is to send out
northern speakers to canvass some < f
the close southern districts in order
to rally-and cad on the negroes and
scalawags in re contest. '1 ins is
exactly what many democrats hope
they will do. They say that such
action would drive together, unite
anil consolidate the democratic partw
and arouse them to a pitch of enthu
siasm that would insure success in
worv instance. Besides, suon north
ern who ipers would, doubtless, find
that, while many southern negroes,
ami a few scalawags would respond
to their call and follow their lead,
there tire many others of the former
ela-s who have Lad ttieir eyes
ojit.iid, and can no longer he misled
bv false promises of “forty acres and
.a mule.” In fact, in many of the
southern dhtrieK democratic- negro
orator? are in training to meet ltio=e nor ti
etn rads ghou'd they corns. They are oeing
well posted as to the corruption and fraud
ct the radical party, some of them an
splendid speakers, and we predict that tcry !
will send the premmplious yank? back l
t oir h jnieg howling should the opportune y
od'er. We call their sp' cial attention lo the
second Georgia di-trict. We will give them
a hearty welcome and set some of on
loudest and biegrst buek negroes oa them
•when they come.
Stand to Your Colors.
We have some reason to su s p>ct
that effirts are being made, in t.onw
pans of the country, to organize what
are called “Greenback Cubs;
p-ihaps to getupa“Gi - ‘ eabaok p,.rty.”
We know hu; lit'le ol it,—have on'y
heard v gue Lints, so far, but we are
inclined to look with suspicion on
• very thing of the km i j st at dit
juncture. We are not so much inter-]
esled in the finances of the country
as wo would iike to be, but if we
know our views on that iemote sub
j ct, wo are a Gteenhacker, itt fact, w
arc in favor of all sorts of tn mey and
plenty of it two from gold down to
shin-plasters, but we believe that the
road to relief, if the country i*, as it
is claimed, in financi-1 distress, lies
through the success of tho democratic
putty.- -
T.iat success is now almost assured.
It is close at hand. The Senate will
in a shoit time be demociatic; and, it
we in a second Georgia district doom
whole duty, the next House will likely
be democratic also. The lecent ex
posures of the rank corruption of tho j
dominant party almost assure the
election ol a democratic President ini
18?0. We believe that fraud and
rascality have gone about as far in
this country as the Altnigh’y will al
low them to go. Tho suiell that goe'
up to Heaven from our national cap.
itu ißgetting too rank ard nauseous
to ba endured much longer. We
are bound to tiave soon ei'her a
change of rulers or a rain of fire aud
tirircetone We want no greenback
clubs or parties in our.-, just at pres
ent. Our whole political faith and
policy, just now consists in sticking
c’ose and tight to the democratic
party and voting the s'riugh! ticket
u'earl Band as ofton as possible- V* lien
that party is once more in power we may
begin to study tho in mey question. —
For the pre-en*, we purpose to con-
linue to confine our financial opera
tors and specula'.i ms to tho occasional
counting over the snail amount of
change wo have on haul. And in
doing this wo shall count a 1 sorts,
gold, silver, greenbacks and shin
j Usfers impartially, considering thi m
aii of equal value and with equal af
fection. It always was a ridiculous
sight to us to see a lazy, idle impecu
nious cuvs raging aud foam ng about
na’ioual finances.

Trouble With Mexico.
It seems that the border trouble
between the United Stales troops
and the Maxicao s art)
about to tesur in something serious
Marauding bands of Mexicans have
long heck in the habit if raiding
into Texas, stealing horses, cattle et<.
While not approving this comse, the
Mexican au hotities seem not to be
able to stop it. Tiie U. S. troops have
frequently followed the marauders'
acioss the border and recaptured their
boo'y. To tins Mexico ot jeets as an
invasion of her nationality, and a war
is likely to break out soon if matters
are not settled. Below we publish an
account of the latest trouble:

in line of battle, Tho Mexican com

MacJvoi zie asked Valdez if he in

tliat it was his, (Mackai z o'e) business
to guaid against that. MaiKnzie

Mackenzie declined tho offer, saying

The Secret of Mr. Stephen’s
Vitality.
A'ex. H. Stephens, the big little
tiling on t’s, uttiacts more attention
from the galleiies than any member.
His strange, emaciated figure, boyish
face topped by a t-if hat, sna’od in
his push-cart before the speaker’s
stand, the nervous twitching of his
hands, his legs crossed, and as thin
and fi it as straps of leather, makes a
p. etiiiar picture among tho body of
cengrejs. . Stephens is a peculiar
man. He is in better health and
more active intillectually at present
than for t n etity years past, and will
make it live y for bis opponents for
yeais to come. The great secret of
Stephens’s lasting power is iu bis
stomach. Ho lias almost a peilect
stomach and n healthy digestion
which is more than most people would
have alder plodding through one of

A writer from Biookfi. id to the
Ban L : County A'cics of the 23d says:
‘'Tan negroes in 'ho employ of J. N.
Weicl iV Brii. were killed some time
last week under tho following leni
bie circumstances : 1 hey wore work
irg some ihiee or ioi r miles from the
station and were in the habit of sleep
ing under a shelter bui.t after the
stylo of isilrobd shanties, of dirt and
poles They eft Brookfield ou Mou
dny Blast week, and nothing more
was seen ii heard of them until early
■Saturday morning. A negro boy was
p issing and, being attracted by a very
obnoxious si* el!, wont to the camp to
see what it was On reaching tirese
he discovered that tho shanty had
tumbled in and krled the two negroes.
H at once gave notice and a jury
was summoned, an inquest held and
the foliowing verdict rendered: “We,
the jury, find that the deceased came
to tiioir deaths by the accidental fail
ing of a shelter ir camp on or about
tho 13th of Jane, 1873.’ It is thought
by mr-st that saw them that they were
killed ou Wednesday night. Oue of
them was badly burned, caused from
the p lea taking fire, and we doubt if
the raiu bad not stopped the fire they
would have been burned completely
up.”
