THE LEGISLATURE The Legislature met at 10 o’clock a. m., on Wednesday, and promptly or ganized by electing Hon. James S. Boynton, of Spalding, President of the Senate, and Hon. Louis F. Garrard, of Muscogee, Speaker of the House. We some time since remarked that there were oniy a few subjects coming before the present session of the Legis lature which would employ its profound action. Among these, howeyer, and w bob we mention at this lime, arc the election of a United States Senator and Judges for several of the judicial circuits. In regard to the first of these subjects, it is the common asser tion of intelligent men all over the State, professing to know, that Senator Brown, Gov. Stephens and Gov. Col quiti. Lave combined to force .the Leg islature t o elect the latter to the vacant United States senatorship, and that the patronage of the State government and mcmey lrom private purses will be nsed to accomplish this purpose, and thus djfeat a wide spread opposition exi ting among thejpeople to Gov. Col quitt s election 'to the Senate. Did tb se assertions come from ignorant, uninformed men, they might well be trialed with dt-rision : but on the con- trary, they come from intelligent, thinking men, in every pkrt.of the State, and caunot be ignored or laughed to sc m. It is also said that this com bination is too strong to be opposed,— This is an alarming state of affairs, when two or three politicians can com- bine and defeat the; will of the people, and we Call upon the Legislature to put a stop to ibis political trickery by crushing this powerful dishonest polit icui combination. The blackest pages in Georgia’s political history is mark ed by Colquitt's administration—more profhga’e than Bullock, he bats strained fhe coolines of law to seek excuses for squandering the people’s money. Had t.tio 8 ate government been equinomo. c.ally aud honestly administered, the public debt could have been paid and t.fye taxes reduced; but a debt of niill- .ione still hangover the peop e of this com monwealth. the taxes remain at the maximum. figures, while Colquitt has accumulated an immense fortune on a $i > 000 salary, and all the time enjoys iug ihe luxuries of a high carnival of unnecessary expenses.
